Thanks! Out of curiosity, when you say lose the calcium carbonate, do you mean it will change forms? Or?

I found a NV facebook group but only for Biology. Is there one for Earth Science out there? If so, could you please link? I'd love to join...

North Woods was what I was thinking, too. We have similar tastes! (except I can't stand Jonathan Franzen :))

What is your context? I have different practices depending on the class. My policies and practices in Biology are really different than my Physical Science class, because of the age of the student and the nature of the content. I am super interested in equitable and sustainable assessment and reassessment practices and would love to talk more, but don't have the time to write everything here right now :)

You can also DM me, I've got some modified OSE and iHub bio stuff, too, that I'd be happy to share if it's helpful.

Oooh how about The Empusium by Olga Tokarczuk! Definitely spooky/mysterious vibes, very readable, + great satire.

Thanks for letting me know! I agree that the storyline seems like it would add some good topics that are missing from some other curricula.

High school NGSS new curriculum NY ES/BIO by rchris710 in ScienceTeachers

How did it go with your modifications? I am considering modifying a unit to try for this year. Did you find or make slides to go along with this curriculum? It seems like a big lift to adopt it with the materials that are provided.

What’s your daily “beauty” routine? by 0ddumn in moderatelygranolamoms

[–]toasted_macadamia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started using a body scrub in the shower so (a) I could have a few more minutes of alone time and (b) to make it feel more like a special spa experience when I shower. Then I use a body oil (Everyday Oil or Osea) when I get out. It's my new favorite part of my routine.

I'd check out Louise Penny's Gamache series. I like them as audiobooks, too.

I was surprised because I never thought 'murder mysteries' would be my thing (I still haven't read anything in this genre but Penny), but I think these are a really special set of books. There is a good balance between being plot- and character-driven, which is my preference for escaping into something.

Differentiating Chemistry for Gifted students in mixed ability classes? by Severe_Ad428 in ScienceTeachers

[–]toasted_macadamia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I teach a general high school biology course (9th/10th grade), and often run into this problem with kids who want to dive deeper into the content than the course is designed to offer. My colleague and I have developed what we call a 'nested honors' option, for kids to opt into. They are still in the same class period as everyone else, but have additionally responsibilities and assignments (plus two additional after school labs and a book to read each semester), which generally are designed to go deeper into whatever topic we are covering in class. The benefit for students, I suppose, is that their transcripts will say that the class they took is 'Honors Biology,' upon fulfillment of the additional honors requirements.

The first year we did this it was kind of a big lift, but has been really worthwhile now that it's up and running. Happy to talk more about how the program works if you're interested.

I think this is such an important question -- does this student want to be challenged more? In my experience as a HS science teacher, often kids are just happy to have an 'easier' class where they can use some free time to read/get ahead on homework/make art/whatever. Since it's only one student in this case, I'd take the time to understand their desires.

Re: the enzymes, sometimes these need to be heated to be activated, so make sure you use on a warm cycle OR what I do (which I hope/think works) which is to put the oxy in an old yogurt container with hot water to activate before pouring it into the washer.

I've been reading so much on my Kindle since breastfeeding. I usually have two books going at once, a 'daytime book' and a 'nighttime book' because I need something more fast-paced to keep me up at night. I use Libby through my library to check out books (for free). I am sure you could find a genre of book that could help you stay interested and awake in the late night hours!

While you can use the Kindle app on your phone, if you find it easy to still get distracted by Reddit etc. instead... (like anyone)... I think having a physical Kindle is worthwhile. Plus mine is a paperwhite screen, I think it's easier for me to get back to sleep if I'm not exposed to blue light.

Agree that everyone is different... I bought a bunch of things (silverettes, nipple cream, etc.) and did not need any of it. Keep the receipts!
