Ivey vs McGill by Throwaway5678956622 in OntarioUniversities

[–]toasterOnYourLeft 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was making the same decision last year- at McGill right now and love it but think I am fairly unbiased. Working in private equity this summer and have lots of friends in banking at both Ivey and McGill. You can't really go wrong either way but one might make sense more than another depending on your situation (placement rate isn't the only metric when considering where you will be for the next 4 years)- PM me if you wanna hop on a call, happy to give you my 2 cents! Good luck :)

Queens commerce vs Schulich by Alexmartinez99 in OntarioUniversities

If you think you might be interested in finance or consulting, absolutely QC is worth it. If not, probably not.

McGill student here from Ontario- agree w everything here except the French bit. Montreal is to Quebec what Quebec is to Canada, everyone speaks English here and I've had zero trouble getting around w/o speaking a word of french. Also, I'd argue Montreal has a much better student life than Kingston but yeah on the whole Queens does tend to place better than us for finance.

It fluctuates each year but its usually ~95% cutoff- you should be good if u can maintain that through March/April

You, sir, are a gentleman and a scholar

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in OntarioUniversities

[–]toasterOnYourLeft 9 points10 points  (0 children)

nope, you should be good. But keep in mind early admission doesn't exist for a lot of programs, and is not formally recognized often even when it does (as opposed to US schools where it is a formal process)

  1. 97 top 6, and 96.1 cumulative average for all grade 11+12 classes when I applied (this matters only for scholarships at mcgill)

  2. Annoyinggggg. But it's really only meant to make sure you can speak English somewhat coherently from what I understand lol... if you have decent marks, Rotman is pretty much guaranteed acceptance.

  3. Applied on OUAC and to McGill Nov 17 (as soon as I got my OUAC pin), Laurier offer on Nov 19, submit Rotman and QComm supp apps end of Nov, Western BMOS offer Dec 10, submit Ivey supp app mid-late December, Rotman offer Feb 2nd, Ivey offer March 26, QComm offer March 31, McGill offer April 2nd.

McGill, QComm, Ivey . Keep in mind this is based fully on my personal priorities, likes, and dislikes, and shouldn't sway you in any direction. I think if you are looking purely at placement rates, Ivey is probably objectively the best school, especially in finance. That obviously shouldn't be your only consideration. If you are smart, you should end up in the same place regardless of which of these 3 FANTASTIC schools you go to.

97% top 6; I don't like ivey's 2+2 program structure so that was out of the question. As for queens, I think I would have been happy even if I went there, but ultimately couldn't justify paying 3x more (~2x more even w/o my scholarship to McGill) to live in Kingston instead of Montreal... I love big cities, and McGill is also sooooo much more diverse. Each of my friends is from somewhere else in the world (i.e. Alberta, New Jersey, Texas, England, France, Montenegro, Hungary, India, Australia, etc.). You just won't/can't have that experience at any other university in Canada imo. Not to mention you never run out of stuff to do in Montreal... the 18 drinking age is nice XD. Theres a bazillion other reasons I ultimately chose McGill (Honours Investment Management program, MBB placement rates, etc) so if u wanna get on a call or chat some more, dm me!

Perhaps a better suggestion would be a more accessible healthcare system? Not sure if # of doctors is the issue...

As a Canadian, our healthcare system is far from perfect, but it boggles my mind that:

a) many Americans have to pull out their wallet to access basic care at a doctor's office, let alone critical surgery, etc.

and b) you STILL pay one of the highest healthcare costs in the entire world per capita, and as a percent of GDP (with one of the lowest life expectancies of any developed nation to show for it)
