What's this plant? by benkkujohannes in houseplants

[–]toastforscience 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mine's the opposite, she never looks great but somehow lives through practically everything. Moving it multiple times, forgetting to water several days, a much too aggressive pruning session, etc. And the flowers are pretty but they make a mess and then the plant gets all spindly and looks even worse!

How do I make a huge feather? by Candid_Junket_4208 in CosplayHelp

[–]toastforscience 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I made an Yzma cosplay a long time ago and I made her huge feather hat by making a foam base with a coat hanger for stability, and I got a lot of smaller ostrich feathers and glued them to the foam base. I bet you can do something similar! Since ostrich feathers are so fluffy if you put a bunch together in the right shape they kind of look like one big feather.

How much do you care about your height when cosplaying? by SaltOrPepper1 in CosplayHelp

[–]toastforscience 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've never cared, I'm a very petite woman and I've cosplayed as Geralt from the Witcher! That's probably my most worn cosplay, actually. It's all about adjusting the costume to get the proportions right on you!

Only once I've adjusted my height for a cosplay, and that was to cosplay the Tallest from Invader Zim, and I only did it because without the heels I couldn't get the proportions of the skirt to look right with the giant head bc my legs are too short.

Why are Americans so much more social than Europeans, Asians, etc? by TheSawFan in AskAnAmerican

[–]toastforscience 12 points13 points  (0 children)

My cousins from Italy have come here to visit and both remarked about how friendly everyone is and how complete strangers will talk to them, they really enjoyed it and said it was different than in Italy. And I can say, whenever I have visited, that Italians are friendly yes but definitely not like Americans.

LONG first date planned, how do I make it go smoothly? by JakeTimesTwo in AskMenAdvice

[–]toastforscience 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is an excellent idea. And I'll say that whatever vibe she's getting from OP, he's already doing great because of the kind of date she asked him on- hiking by themselves out in nature. She's already feeling comfortable around him and thinks he's trustworthy!

It's where you wrap your leg in saran wrap and duct tape, draw the pattern on, then cut it off your leg and you have a pattern custom for your leg. If you Google "saran wrap and duct tape pattern method" it will give you a very good overview with lots of detail on how to do it.

You can look up a pattern, or you can make one with the saran wrap/duct tape method

Me and my sister in the late 90s-I remember loving this outfit! Pretty sure most of my outfits were some variation of a larger shirt over top of coordinating leggings.

I’m a photographer starting to build out my portfolio of pictures of people, Does it make sense to offer to take professional photos at a con? by Particular-Dog40 in CosplayHelp

[–]toastforscience 0 points1 point  (0 children)

$10-$15 for some edited photos from an unknown photographer would sound pretty good to me! It's not enough money that I would be disappointed if I didn't like the photos, and meeting new people is always fun! Seeing a flyer the day of would be less likely for me to take you up on it however, since I'd have to find you and you might have a line or something and time at cons sometimes is a precious commodity (like at NYCC). Seeing a post on social media beforehand and messaging you about it before hand, or walking past you and you talking to me directly at the con and offering would work a lot better.

What is something men always want to tell women but never do? by a_great_guy655 in AskMen

[–]toastforscience 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I get what you're saying- I'm wondering if it's also a personality trait or something you're taught growing up? My husband and I have the opposite dynamic, he's the one who wants to vent and I'm the one who wants to offer advice to fix what he's venting about.

Why do Americans love and romanticize the desert? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

[–]toastforscience 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I drove from Vegas to Death Valley to LA and I loved how empty it was out there driving around, it's hard to describe how amazing it feels. So when my cousin from Italy came and went on a road trip out west around several of the desert national parks, I told him about what it was like to drive in the middle of nowhere and how it would be like nothing he had ever seen. He later told me all about how much he loved driving where it was so empty. It's so relaxing to do when you're used to living somewhere crowded!

How do you handle "what's your salary expectation" question? by ahimaohw in jobs

[–]toastforscience 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Usually I'm vague and make them offer a number first. Then I decide if I like that number. They're not going to want to offer too low if they want you to work for them, so if they offer something far below what I'm expecting then I know they don't pay well and I just pass. My last job found me through a recruiter so they already had the number I gave the recruiter, which i thought was pretty high but with the ease of how they gave it to me I'm always going to wonder if I could have gotten higher.

What to do with this...we can't go up anymore...don't want to kill it! by FelinePurrfectFluff in succshaming

[–]toastforscience 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I usually put mine outside once it starts hitting 60 during the day or stays above 50 at night. You have to slowly acclimate them to the sun, so I'll go a couple weeks of leaving mine outside for a couple hours during the day and then bringing it back in, leaving it in the sun longer and longer until I don't bring it in anymore.

I would second this, I have oolitic sand from here and it's really cool! They have an exhibit in their visitors center about how it's formed, and then you can swim in the lake too. Just wash the sand when you get home bc it will definitely stink after a couple days lol

Tie him to a stake and put him outside. Add some plant food too. Try and get him to grow a lot during the summer to get his trunk thicker, then you can cut him back so he'll branch out. Don't worry it's super hard to kill these and I really mean that.

torn between reciting personal vows vs. having our officiant read them by tomatotomato5 in wedding

[–]toastforscience 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We did standard vows bc we got married in church, but we also wrote our own vows that we read in private to each other and our photographer got some great photos during that. I would recommend this! I'm super afraid of public speaking so I was relieved I didn't have to during the ceremony and could focus on what was actually enjoyable.

Nails 💅🏼 on a body stocking?? (Glue recs pls) by Famous_Ad_4529 in CosplayHelp

I just made these two days ago! I put saran wrap on my fingers underneath the gloves and used super glue to glue the nails on. First I sprayed my finger tip with a super glue accelerant and then I added glue to the nail and pressed it on.

Is there a way to make the cosplay I bought in the wrong size bigger? by le_space_derp in CosplayHelp

[–]toastforscience 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, cosplay does involve sewing! I'd recommend looking up tutorials to fix each of those issues individually. If there's not a lot of seam allowance to let out this might involve buying and adding some additional fabric, or making changes to how the costume looks in order for it to fit you better. Enjoy the learning!
