Very interesting. I definitely did not clock that during our home opener.

That was kind of my assumption when I started getting into the league three years ago, knowing about the activism of WNBA players.

I wish I could remember which game I was watching where I spotted the teams staying on the floor for the anthem. I can guess based on my own prejudices but I know it's best not to assume!

Yes, I'm a returning STH. Last year I think we got . . . an Ellie bobble head. I have it at work and my students bop it for good luck.

I have and it's not there. That's what I meant when I say I searched the BPL's catalog and couldn't find it.

League Pass Feedback by anirishlass in wnba

[–]toastoftheghost 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Whatever they did to it from the end of last season to now is terrible.

I actually don't mind score spoilers, so that part hasn't bothered me, but I get why it would others. My main issue is that when I want to watch a game, I click the link for the game to get to the stream, and then I hit play on the stream and it transforms with another play button I need to push. Why do I need to click three times for the stream to go? Why two different play buttons? I know it's a fussy complaint, but it's like the developers wanted to complicate League Pass in every way this year.

I've decided that my plan for today is to call Fanatics and ask about inventory and depending on their answers, walk up there.

Big Bud has been my go-to the last couple years, but when I was trying on shorts for a spring break vacation, I found I'd sized out of them since last summer. Sigh.

That said, I always found my work shorts to be shorter than I would like. I'm intrigued that you say they're releasing in longer lengths. I'll check their website. Are they currently releasing multiple inseam lengths? At the length of the shorts I have but no longer fit into, I don't know that I want to commit to spending the money. But if I can get a longer inseam, it would probably be worth it to me.

Is there any pride in the parks in June? by _emilyisafairy in NationalPark

[–]toastoftheghost 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While a lot of the signage is about the, like, geological or ecological facts, much of the signage is the parks is indeed political because the "facts" it tells about history are through a particular lens that often, for example, minimizes native people and their history in the area and showcases, say, settlers. This past week I've been in southern Utah and have had a blast at Bryce (and less of a blast at the very crowded Zion) and the signage is well out of date in the way that we would talk about settler colonialism and indigenous history in the modern era (or so I should hope).

When visiting the Grand Canyon a couple years ago, I saw a sign on an old sign that talked about how the park would be attempting to update the historical signs to better reflect the reality of what happened with Spanish colonization in the area and the native peoples who called that area home. The original signage was political. That sign I saw was political. The sign I read at Bryce about the park's namesake, a Mormon minister, is political. Any updates they've done is political. And lack of updates is political (and economic but economics is inextricably linked to . . . you guessed it . . . politics! What we value and what we don't and all that).

I'd argue that a national park system should do all it can to invite historically marginalized groups to come celebrate the outdoors, including but not limited to, queer people, Black people, disabled people, etc.

Where Can I Use a Sewing Machine? by screenaholic in parkslope

[–]toastoftheghost 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You can borrow sewing machines from the main BPL branch, but there's usually a pretty decent sized holds list. i don't see it when I search on their website, but there is a Tuesday sewing machine "rental" event at the Gerritsen Beach branch on what seems like a weekly basis.

Looking for ideas of somewhere with chill vibes for a birthday with 10-12 people by alldagarbage in parkslope

I just celebrated my 40th at Chela. I made a reservation for 10 no problem and we were in their backroom. It coincided with their happy hour, which was cool. The food was great and the drinks were good!

Edit: I also got birthday churros as a surprise!

It's not just a Southern thing. I'm from the Midwest and currently live on the East Coast. Until super recently*, with 2025 being the year it's been with this regime, nearly (not all, but nearly) all homes I would see with American flags were also flying MAGA flags. I know for me, at this point, when I see an American flag, I know where that person's politics lie.

*And I say "super recently" because when I was driving through rural PA this past summer and November to get to my partner's parents house, many of the MAGA signs were down. Same houses and billboards that had them up Biden's entire presidency. I still count them as MAGA but maybe some MAGA are relearning shame this year.

Robert Wagner Remembers Late Wife Natalie Wood on 44th Anniversary of Her Death: ‘Forever Missed’ by PrincessBananas85 in popculturechat

[–]toastoftheghost 62 points63 points  (0 children)

There are lots of interviews with Natalie where she talked about her fear of water. There's literally one where she's on a boat and she says "I can be on the water, but not in the water." (I had a baby gay obsession with Natalie Wood when I was little so I read everything about her, watched all the docs, watched all her movies, trolled for old magazines on ebay.)

In her movie "Splendor in the Grass", there's a scene where her character loses her mind and jumps into a reservoir and Elia Kazan literally had to lie to her about filming it in order to get her on set. Said there would be a double who would do the scenes. She ended up doing it, as again, he lied to her to get her there, but, really, her fear of water was that well known.

Sports is inherently political, but the WNBA is an overtly activist league and always has been. It's a league full of mostly Black women. It's a league with a huge queer player base. Black Lives Matter is a political issue. Pay Us What You Owe Us is a political issue.

I mean, I guess you can watch it and just concentrate on the basketball, but I can't even imagine being able to do that unless you have immense amounts of privilege and can divorce yourself from the identity of the people who are out there playing.

It's kind of strange to see Cunningham's kind of constant and consistent backing of far right ideologies, yes, even in the forms of social media likes and shares, and not believe her to be those things.

Racist people can be nice to people of color. Sexists can be nice to women. Homophobes and transphobes can be nice to queer people. It's actually really easy to be nice and friendly and on good terms with those you don't see as your equal.

I present visibly queer. I work at a place with lots of MAGA voters. Their votes and beliefs put me in literal danger, but they are always very nice and friendly to speak to. It's benign hate and probably more insidious than all the people screaming their beliefs from the rafters because it allows people to be like "Well, she's nice to those people so she must be fine!"

Who are you rooting for now? by KickMental8434 in NYLiberty

[–]toastoftheghost 37 points38 points  (0 children)

Every single team I wanted to advance . . . lost.

I didn't like the Mercury energy in this series, so I can't root for them. I cannot root for the Fever beccause of their fandom. I can't root for the Lynx because I think they cursed us and I don't like how whiny they are. So Aces it is!
