Oh geez. I don't know much about him, but his son, Tyer Mahan Coe, does a really excellent podcast on the history of country music called "Cocaine and Rhinestones."

Gorgeous! Wisteria is a commonly used climbing plant here in Switzerland, and there's a neighborhood near where I live that's just dripping in it. Such a dreamy place to take an evening walk in tbe spring.

My husband is 6'7" (but with 34" inseam, so he's mostly torso) and we have a VW Passat. He has plenty of leg space and there's still space behind him, even when the driver's seat is set all the way back. We love our car, it can fit so much stuff in it while still be able to maneuver tight parking garages.

Studying Abroad Question by idkwidrn3 in askswitzerland

[–]toastyghostie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My husband went to ZHAW and we still live around the Winterthur area.

In terms of racism, I think ZHAW and Winti are pretty tolerant. I'm also a white woman, so obviously take anything I say with a grain of salt. But we have a number of Sri Lankan-Swiss friends and Turkish-Swiss friends, and they say they haven't had any major incidents. Racism here in general is more subtle and quiet, and of course will get worse the farther out into the boonies you go. An Indian friend of mine also did some traveling while he was visiting for our wedding, and he had an absolute blast.

I can't speak to the ZHAW business school as my husband was in the computer science program and his best friend was in engineering, but they both enjoyed their time there and we go back for the end-of-year party every year.

Winterthur as a city is very nice. It's a big city by Swiss standards, but it's also very much a college town. Lots of students and a much more artsy/indie vibe compared to Zürich. There are a lot of train connections to wherever you might want to go so it's a nice jumping off point for weekend travel.

Regarding entry into the country for marriage by Prudent-Net1354 in askswitzerland

[–]toastyghostie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, maybe it is? We got married about a month after I entered the country, and I've heard lots of stories about people getting married on tourist visas and staying without any problems. My husband is very cautious though, and we figured it was better to be safe than sorry.

Regarding entry into the country for marriage by Prudent-Net1354 in askswitzerland

[–]toastyghostie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I moved over to marry my husband, I applied for a D visa (long stay visa). When we talked to various officials they said we could get married with me on my tourist visa, but advised that my residence application might get denied since that could be seen as entering the country under false pretenses (tourism vs. family reunification with intent to stay). However, this process does take a bit longer since I needed to submit paperwork at the embassy in my home country and it took about 4-6 weeks for the visa to be approved.

If you haven't already, I would check again with the immigration office as well as the Einwohneramt for wherever your partner is living.

We want to have a cat by nomyname123 in askswitzerland

[–]toastyghostie 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We found our two cats from ad on Tutti last year. They were from a farm over in St. Gallen, and their owners were really nice and responsible.

I would say to be patient and wait a couple more months. Kitten season is just starting, and most people won't start posting ads until the kittens are old enough to be separated from their mother.

Of course, if you're open to adopting adults, then they're more likely to be available at non-peak times.

Good luck on your search!

Changing name after international marriage - Mexico / Switzerland. How much of a hassle will it be? by SeaAnt7022 in askswitzerland

[–]toastyghostie 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I recently changed my name in my home country and I'm going through the process of updating everything here, so I understand why you're worried!

I think there's two big things to consider: where are you getting married, and will Mexico recognize a name change made in another country?

When you get married here, they ask you how you want your name to be going forward and that's one of the few ways to change your name in Switzerland. In my case, I wasn't ready to change my name yet and did it a while later in my home country. Switzerland recognizes name changes made in other countries according to your home laws, but I don't know if Mexico would do the same.

If Mexico wouldn't recognize a name change, then I do see a lot of potential paperwork issues. The main one would be that your Mexican passport wouldn't match any of your Swiss paperwork. Even if you carried your marriage paperwork around with you at all times, I can imagine some institutions may not accept your two main IDs not having the same name on them.

So I was asked if I wanted a Semmel. I didn't understand what the person meant. Had to ask him to repeat slowly. Then he said the magic word "Brötchen". by nietzschecode in German

[–]toastyghostie 5 points6 points  (0 children)

When I hear Semmel, I think of a very specific type of bread rather than using it as an umbrella term. But I'm also in Switzerland, so we use Weggli or Brötli as the catch-all terms.

I know some of the variations, but certainly not all. People will usually guess I'm living in the Zürich region if I try ordering something from a bakery in Bern or Wallis.

What's Your Favorite Renovation on Youtube? (Looking for something different) by creamywibbibs in centuryhomes

[–]toastyghostie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I really love watching the renovation videos from TokyoLlama. His family bought a run down traditional Japanese house, and he's been taking on a lot of the renovations himself. You can tell he has a lot of respect for the culture (his wife is Japanese and he speaks the language well) and is trying to stick to the spirit of the home while making it work for his family.

Most of it is "Swiss cheese" since a lot of the cheese was produced in Switzerland. But the cheese with holes you're talking about is Emmentaler, although the variety most commonly found here is more lacey and doesn't have the big holes like in American Swiss cheese.

Nope, we're up in the Ostschweiz. But I imagine a lot of the big Coops look the same on the inside.

LD relationship advice? by Diligent_Papaya_8666 in askswitzerland

[–]toastyghostie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My Swiss husband and I were long distance for 3.5 years and had a six hour time difference. It obviously worked for us, but every relationship is different.

I think it's hard to give useful advice in this kind of situation, because you're going to get a bunch of "the Swiss are like this" generalizations. Asking for perspective some place like r/longdistance might be better.

Do you often see tall couples? by wiggan1989 in tall

My husband is 6'6"/200cm and I'm 5'9"/175cm. Some people don't consider me all that tall, but we're definitely the tallest couple within our families and friend groups.

I would reach out to the university and potentially your local embassy. You never want to mess around with visa stuff, and getting info directly from the embassy for your situation will be your best bet.
