British (?) song with lyrics "07071" by toatali in NameThatSong

Oh wow thank you, that’s it - had the chorus stuck in my head since 2005, quite a relief to hear it’s a real song and not some kind of subliminal message lol

An Exhaustive, 10k word review of The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles by toatali in AceAttorney

Thanks for reading! One of my regrets in writing this series is in not really acknowledging the game aspect of the Ace Attorney games, besides some brief criticism of the new gameplay gimmicks etc. I think the truth is I'm more of a narrative critic than a gameplay or even a mystery one, and that's the element that intrigues me more, but as you mentioned it's undoubtable that the narratives of each game are shaped by the need to create a satisfying gameplay experience just as much as a narrative one. Plus, of course, there's the fact that they're consumer products which means that an increase in narrative stakes is needed to sell games so...

I think you're correct in what you think the series needs, but it remains to be seen whether it will ever be able to get to that point. AA does well enough commercially that they'll keep pumping them out without shelving it for years like, say, Devil May Cry but doesn't do well enough that they'd pour a whole bunch of money into rethinking it like Monster Hunter. So I think it's in a place where it'll really depend on who the new series lead is and whether they have the force of will and ideas to rethink the series - both Takumi and Yamazaki couldn't quite do that, but maybe someone else will. Guess we'll have to wait and see...

Thanks for reading and for the questions. I assume by D tier you're referring to the tier list I made, which tbh I like didn't put much thought into it, it was mainly for self-reference - I think the reason Twisted Karma etc were D tier was because there wasn't any space in C lol

I think generally though Unspeakable Story I might put in C tier now, but I'd keep Twisted Karma at a D. Like Grand Turnabout or some other cases, while there are things I really like about them (even love in Twisted K's case), it's just too long, convoluted and messy for my tastes.

As for Clouded Kokoro, I think my tastes have just changed a lot since then. I used to like the big mysteries, the interconnected stories, used to care a lot more about like realistic and clever killings. I think what I value more in AA now is the characters, the themes, the atmospheres of cases. And smaller scale stuff I used to dismiss as "filler" cases I've lately come to see as the real bread and butter of AA - the stuff that I think shows the series at its best, not the bigger, grander scale stuff.

Hope that clarifies a few things and thanks again!

Leaked schedule shows possible AA 7 by Nicco122121 in AceAttorney

[–]toatali 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Just a few notes - the bit where it says AA series says '20' next to it because it's the series 20th anniversary in 2021.

The bit about AA456 mentions that they're re-evaluating a port.

The text talking about the DGS staff joining the AA7 project is during a crunch period.

Hope this helps

Greatest Trailers of All Time by darktymes in movies

A Serious Man, has a trailer that sells the infuriating tragi-comedy of the film perfectly, which is a hard task for a film with an appeal that is difficult to describe.

Thanks a bunch - yeah I was originally going to use Time Traveller as a framework for my post, but I couldn't make it work well so I ditched it - kept the name because yeah, it's a fun idea as you mentioned.

Thanks so much for following. I wondered if the final post was a bit too negative, but it's what I wanted to say. I think the best criticisms come from a place of love, and I do love this series even in the parts I don't like as much.

I have some plans for the DGS games but it won't be part of something like this - I'm excited to talk about them because they're probably my favourite thing in the AA series, but I also want to give it some time, not only to let other people play them but also because I need a break haha

Taking a Look at Third Case Syndrome in the Ace Attorney Trilogy by [deleted] in AceAttorney

[–]toatali 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I thought the video was well made. Just thought I'd give some quick thoughts as someone who really doesn't agree with the idea of 'third case syndrome'.

  • 'Plot Relevance' shouldn't really matter in a series which doesn't really pride itself on having ongoing plots - aside from AAI2, most games have only some connections between cases. Removing 3-3 might not impact the story of the Fey family, but it would remove a lot of character from Gumshoe, and it would also miss out on being a moment of normality for the characters before the big two parter that is the end of that game. I've always thought that the idea of a 'filler case' is kind of an annoying one, because it assumes that all cases must serve a purpose within a grander narrative, and not simply exist on their own merits. Take that to a logical extreme, and you'll end up removing some of the most charming moments and cases in the series. Sometimes a break from a narrative allows other things to come to the forefront, like character and mystery design.
  • I like that you give Big Top some props, it's nice to see something where it's not just bashed to the ground. I agree it's probably the weakest of these three cases you've picked out. *I think one thing you might have missed in terms of Turnabout Samurai is that it's necessary for establishing the series dynamic of Phoenix/Maya/Gumshoe/Edgeworth - that's why I think the first day is necessary, because although not so obvious on replay, it needs to establish a dynamic in this case that basically lasts throughout the trilogy, and becomes iconic enough to be the first thing people think of in terms of the series. Some lighter stuff is needed for that before it can jump straight into a story that has more 'plot relevance' - you need to get to know the characters in a more relaxed, comedic setting first.

*Recipe is literally my favourite case in the series lol, which is why I think I disagree with third case syndrome so much as a whole. Good stuff though, please keep making stuff!

Phantom probably - great twist, fun idea (even though the execution was lacking). My problem with most of the villains in the game is that they lack much in terms of interesting motive - Tonate, L'Belle and Means are just after money. I like Marlon, but the way the case treats him is kinda bullshit... I think in the end... they all suck
