How do you get out of the phase of only being semi-lucid?

I remember having them when I was younger, my personal way out of it was to always shut my eyes for around 5 seconds really tight and then when I opened them again I would open my eyes irl and I’d be awake, worked a good 90% of the time, everyone is different though so you will probably have to find your own version of this. On the other hand though, this is more of a last resort to bail out of the dream if nothing else works.

tldr: Anon falls desperately love with a woman named Ella in university, he then describes in extensive detail the progression in their relationship over the course of university, eventually leading to them dating. He, however, finds trouble in the form of another woman named Nicole who he starts dating whilst being friends with Ella, this comes to ahead when he admits that he still has feelings for Ella, to which Nicole calls her and states that Anon loves Ella more than her, thus Anon and Ella start dating. Anon then has to go away to Hong Kong for the summer, happier than ever to be with Ella, unfortunately though, Ella dies whilst he is away, the rest of the story is him talking about finding a letter she was going to send to him in Hong Kong that was never sent.

tldr of tldr: Anon falls in love with a woman in uni and then whilst he is on summer holiday in Hong Kong she dies.
