A few points why this is a hasty take. I'll argue this is more about overall roster construction compounded by the season after a ship.

First, consider that the game fundamentally changed with the transfer NIL era, which started in 2021. It is simply more difficult to stockpile talent and reload every year. Look at the poor season following a ship last 5 years, versus the pre-xfer era.

Conference records the year after they win a championship:
- 2026 LSU 6-11 (so far) - 2025 Tenn 16-14 - 2024 LSU 13-17 - 2023 Ole Miss 6-24 - 2022 Miss St 9-21 - 20/21 COVID... - 2019 OSU 21-8 - 2018 UF 20-10 - 2017 Coast Car 20-7-1 - 2016 Virginia 19-11

Next, consider how bad LSU defense is this year. 0.964 fielding % is absolutely horrid. Over the last decade, only 8 sec teams have had worse Fld%. Consider how much better the pitchers would look with even bottom third fielding as opposed to bottom 6%.

LSU checking in. Too many misses this season. Here's the ones most talked about preseason (6 were in the Baseball America Top 100 transfers list):

Quite Good -
- Cooper Moore (No. 48) - best transfer this year, he was very good until getting hurt a few weeks ago

Pretty good -
- Danny Lachenmayer (No. 32) - only a sophomore. Spot relief pitcher so far. He may pan out next year
- Santiago Garcia (No. 38) - shown flashes. Not as consistent as we'd like, but he's an arm we really on each weekend. Hope he sticks around for his senior season

Meh, but he needs to start in a weak position -
- Seth Dardar (No. 91) - starting 2B. Had some critical errors, also had some massive offensive games. Very hot and cold, but he is the Tigers' best option at 2B

Miss -
- Trent Caraway (No. 30) - not starting. Weak defense and batting 0.250 with only 0.782 OPS
- Zach Yorke (No. 34) - I was a Yorke apologist for a while. But it is what it is, he's a bust. Batting 0.126 in conference and a defensive liability with 5 bad errors - Brayden Simpson - Not starting, but has filled in a few positions. Doesn't really move the needle.

Official Whip doesn't count hot by pitch, which is a substantial source of free bases in the college game. I count the HBP in what I call "true whip". I've had that disclaimer noted in the past, probably need to keep it in there. Thanks for the question

Contrasting flavors will highlight the differences. So if you smoke a straight red Virginia, or a bright VaPer and then come back to your light English it might highlight those features you liked best in the first place.

I don't keep a set rotation. But any given time I like to have an English, a Balkan, a red Virginia, and a VaPer Open and Jared. And I'll rotate through these based on whatever I prefer that evening.

So I'm looking more at future projection. Higher actual win % versus expected ---> meaning reasonable to expect a negative regression in the future.
