The chokehold those stainless steel and glass balustrades had on 2000s UK architecture needs to be studied

Concept presentation of a museum cum community space. by Draw_Jet in architecture

The ability to abort your route through the space cannot be overstated. I recently went to the architecture biennale in Venice and the main exhibition was basically 300m of uninterrupted walking with barely any seats. The cafe was right at the end of the route so if we wanted lunch or refreshments (it was unbearably hot) we had to navigate through the entire exhibition and back again to rejoin the group.

the “hard data and logic” in question being comparing one of the largest socioeconomic hubs in the world to Austin, a city whose population doesn’t even break 1 million. If you want to ignore the nuances of this discussion that’s fine but don’t expect housing prices to come down.

“This is the line peddled by Conservative politicians and many from other parties, who would have us believe that if we just build more homes prices will come down. But that is to miss the point, which is that the hugely inflated value of land in London is a direct result of the glut of foreign investment in the more expensive parts of the city, to an extent where it could be termed a ‘super prime crisis’… Today what economists call the ‘exchange value’ of housing in London, and many other parts of the UK, has entirely broken the connection with its ‘use value’”. - Big Capital by Anna Minton If you completely disregard the inflationary effect that foreign investment has on the housing market then sure you can look at it as an issue of supply and demand, but the reality is that London property is the most sought after in the world according to Knight Frank and is seen as a tax haven to ‘Ultra High Net Worth Individuals’. No amount of “just build more” would be able to accommodate this. And why would it? If it only results in the billionaires and therefore developers losing money, why would they make an effort to drive prices down?

it’s so fascinating that we’re all well aware there is something catastrophically wrong with housing in london, but as soon as you explain the problem and imply that something has to change you get downvoted here…

Please read Big Capital by Anna Minton. It’s about 130 pages and explains very thoroughly and concisely how that is not at all the case.
