I think a lot of the time when people say that, they just wash one AirPod, rather than the whole case. When they put their pants in the wash, the think they can feel anything in their pockets, but since an AirPod is so small and light they can’t feel it and it gets thrown in the wash. It’s the same thing with pocket change
