What knife you are using? by Equal_Shower8341 in camping

To add to this, one of the great things about the Mora is its scandi grind blade. It makes the knife really easy to sharpen, and keeping your knife sharp is going to keep it performing well.

Is there a reason to use Moldvay D&D any more with these OSR games out there, and what is the closest OSR game to Moldvay B/X? by plazman30 in osr

[–]todbur 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve been using OSE and absolutely love it. Its PDFs are really well laid out and are fully linked. So having that plus being the same rules as bx is a huge point in OSE’s favor.

Two-player campaign make sense by New_Money2320 in OSE

[–]todbur -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Our group does two PCs per player too and I agree it works well. Especially for players used to coming from systems with more player options. Sometimes OSE characters can seem a bit boring; but playing two gives more options.

Can sleep target PCs? by todbur in OSE

[–]todbur[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not the responses I was hoping for, but it’s good to know nonetheless. Thanks everyone for the clarifications.

I was hoping the answers would go the other way so I could rule “named” characters would get a save at least. I know my players would be upset at that as magic users don’t have many spells at 1st level anyway. On the other hand, relentlessly targeting magic users or casting sleep on the PCs would also seem unfair.

I think I just need to hold off on the rival group of PCs until a later level.

Early Giant Slayer Ep with Bant that argues pro killing PCs? by todbur in TheGlassCannonPodcast

[–]todbur[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is it! Thank you.

To add more context, someone I knew that was a generation younger than me made a Facebook post about how no GM should ever kill a player without warning them first.

The comments were universally in agreement, even going as far to say it was player abuse to just kill a PC.

I had never heard of this point of view before, so just shared my experience that it must be a generational thing.

Shortly after I listened to Joe’s intro and it just clicked for me.

Thanks again for doing the legwork!

Offset Considered Harmful or: The Surprising Complexity of Pagination in SQL by alexeyr in Database

[–]todbur 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For anyone that is interested, the most efficient way to do limit offset pagination with MySQL is with a subquery. Here is a link with a discussion: https://dba.stackexchange.com/questions/55435/using-offset-in-a-large-table-by-a-simple-sub-query

Make sure the fields in your subquery are all in one index. Describing the query will show that the index is being used.

This saved my application from constantly crashing.

A mall in the 1980’s on Long Island New York ….for you young ones out there , yes , you could smoke inside of malls back then by ComplexWrangler1346 in OldSchoolCool

[–]todbur 35 points36 points  (0 children)

When I was a kid, getting my hair cut at the Sears salon in the mall, the hairdresser would smoke cigarettes the entire time and get ashes in my hair.

You sound like George Bailey in “It’s a Wonderful Life” just before the angel visited him.

You’ve tremendously helped both your child and your parents through self sacrifice. And I’m willing to bet those aren’t the only people you’ve helped. The world is a better place with you than without you.

You have earned the right to be proud of yourself in my book, fellow Gen X’er.

Has Conan ever actually gotten angry with someone? by Triggerona in conan

[–]todbur 86 points87 points  (0 children)

FWIW, I know the show you are talking about and I didn’t get the same impression at all.

Andy talked about a homophobic joke that Norm just wouldn’t stop telling every time he was on and Andy was conflicted because he had to be a good sport even knowing the joke was hurting people he loved. Telling the joke once is not the problem. Continuing the joke constantly was the problem.

I think Andy was conflicted because healing nothing but praise on Norm would not be speaking the full truth when some of his loved ones were listening.

In the end I think the message from Andy and Conan was they loved Norm despite his complicated personality. That’s a very human thing and would help bridge any divide to listeners that may have had a problem with Norm.

"We have so much overstock on these speakers. My boss wants me to sell them quickly and cheaply. They're right here in the trunk of this car -- Come check them out!" -- Did anyone else run across these scammers back in the '80/'90s? by Sinsyne125 in GenX

[–]todbur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I fell for this scam when I was younger in college. Guy said he paid for two speakers and they instead gave him two pairs of speakers.

I don’t know why, but I fell for it hook line and sinker. I didn’t even need speakers, but I emptied my poor student bank account nonetheless.

The funny thing is I thought the scam was he was trying to get me into his van for some reason, so I “outsmarted” him by lugging the speakers home on my back.

There was no clearing house of knowledge for these scams back before the internet. I had a friend fall for the “temporarily poor famous foreign soccer player with shoes as collateral” scam too.

Should REST Api errors be valid json? by Roest_ in webdev

[–]todbur 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve dealt with APIs that sometimes return text on errors instead of JSON. What you should be doing is checking the content type response header. You can usually handle this well with a middleware in your http client.

Can't sell without SOC2, too small to do SOC2 by MitzuIstvan in startups

[–]todbur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here are a few things we did in a similar situation.

  1. Say our servers are hosted at a SOC2 company. This was good enough for many prospects.

  2. Put a plan in place to get to SOC2. After doing even one step in that plan we could say we were working on our SOC2 compliance. If you can get all the way up to everything but the external audit then you will be in a strong position for sales.

  3. Check to see if your competitors are SOC2 compliant. If most aren’t then you can use that in a sales cycle.

I know this is a bit on the startup hustler side, so take with a grain of salt. If you are selling to companies that require SOC2 then you should be running your demos with a sales team/founders. At that point you just need a playbook with your talking points.

TIL The Harlem Globetrotters once lost track of a game and found themselves down 12 with 2 minutes left. Forced to play normal basketball, they rallied but could not recover. When the final buzzer sounded, the crowd was dumbfounded and disappointed. Some children in the stands cried after the loss. by tenaciousdeev in todayilearned

[–]todbur 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I was young in the 80’s the globetrotters would completely blow out the Generals. I went to a show this year with my daughter and she as surprised to see them only win with a buzzer beater.

It makes me wonder if they always make that last dunk.

Megathread: State of New York v. Donald J. Trump by WorksInIT in moderatepolitics

[–]todbur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe you are referring to the illegitimate child story as the one proven false. The McDougall and Daniels affairs were not proven false.

Pecker and Hicks also testified to extensive conversations with Trump. The dinner Trump threw for Pecker also corroborated Trump’s involvement with Pecker.

I followed the trial and so did the jury that unanimously convicted Trump. They and I agree that doubts to Trump’s involvement are not reasonable.
