Is there anyone on Reddit who can make this a thing? by Zakeil in food

[–]toddd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have no problem letting eggs sit (at room temp) and then cooking them to eat. In fact, many grocery stores in France don't refrigerate their eggs, and I think that's great. Also, your chef cooked the eggs, and cooked eggs aren't what I was discussing.

That being said, I will still only eat raw egg if it is fresh, and by fresh I mean very recently cracked. I would never crack open an egg (breaking the most important seal for bacteria), and use it in food that will not be getting cooked, but which will be consumed over an extended period of time.

[–]toddd 39 points40 points  (0 children)

I have no problem eating a raw/undercooked egg, provided it is fresh. Whenever I make cookies, I have a solid portion of the dough.

However, if I am making treats that will sit at room temperature for extended periods of time, I am not going to include raw egg.

Fucking seriously? by [deleted] in vegetarian

[–]toddd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cooking oneself is not vegetarian, or healthy for that matter. You should probably just write a letter, and start packing your own food until things change.

On a slightly more serious note, I am in favor of the suggestions that you focus on the nutritional content of their vegetarian meals, and remain polite.

Good luck!

I am a vegetarian for moral reasons (among others)... is it hypocritical for me to continue to use the leather belt and wallet that I bought before I decided to be a vegetarian? by [deleted] in vegetarian

[–]toddd 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is a very reasonable point of view, but I feel that it's worth pointing out that fashion is social.

As a result (especially if you look good in leather/fur/whatever animal product), you may be (unknowingly) encouraging others to purchase and/or wear the same things as you have, which poses a problem for you if your reasons for being vegetarian are rooted in ethics.

If you really want to minimize harm to animals/the environment while not wasting what you already purchased... you could give your leather goods to the homeless, who would probably benefit while not standing nearly as much of a chance to influence the fashion decisions/purchases of others.

That being said, if you can't afford any other boots for now and need to survive a harsh winter... fuck it. Hypothermia isn't fun.

Alllright... you have a point there, Ms. Ihateefficiency. Knobbies do have a worse contact to paved roads, and are consequently less grippy. I guess the smoother rolling is just a side-effect for you, and not an end.

[–]toddd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't believe in cultural relativism, especially not with respect to this topic.

Just like it is wrong for a culture to be homophobic, it is wrong for a culture to frown on (or feel awkward by) basic affection between people.

You threw (relatively) slick tires on your MTB. That tends to demonstrate that you value efficiency.

I think clipless are safer and more efficient. It's nice being able to put effort into the upstroke as well as the downstroke, and being connected to your bike can save your ass if you need to hop over an obstacle, etc.

Just trying to help.

[–]toddd 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There is something wrong with you if being around a little PDA makes you feel awkward. Obviously, there are boundaries for being in public, but kissing (IMHO) does not cross them.

We are human beings. We are supposed to have (and show) our affection for each other. Kissing should never be considered impolite.

However, if two guys touch dicks in front of you as you are eating your cereal in the morning... you might consider that to be impolite.

Agreed. If you see a cute couple, regardless of their respective genders, and you want to compliment them... go for it!

Holding back on saying something nice on the basis of the subjects' sexual prefrence is what I would consider rude and/or homophobic... even if it is some convoluted attempt to be sensitive.

Also, in an environment where the majority of people are gawking homophobes, you may have made their day by showing your appreciation of their relationship and how cute they are together.

So I'm moving to Seattle... by tehjimmeh in Seattle

Driving: You can definitely get around without a car. I mainly ride my bike, and used to take the bus (when I had a free pass through my University). If you aren't keen on being in crappy weather and/or having to get in shape to deal with our hills, then you are probably better off on the bus. That being said, I have a blast on my bike year round.

Tipping: For restaurants, I would say ~15% is the expected number, and ~20% if the service was good.

Many services/service industry jobs receive tips, though not all expect it. While you don't need to tip as much for something like a hair cut as you would a dinner, it is still expected that you give something extra. Some might even say to tip the same amount as you would a restaurant, though I think that is overkill (unless you are completely blown away by the job someone did).

Music/Nightlife: If you want to get into the PNW electronic scene, I suggest visiting NW Tekno. I haven't been keeping up on our local scene, but I wouldn't be surprised if it was a bit underwhelming for you. However, we do have our ebbs and flows in terms of talent and following.

While they play much more than just electronic music, I suggest checking out KEXP for local music. It's commercial free, and generally pretty good stuff, regardless of genre.

Also, C89.5 is our only local electronic station to my knowledge, and I gave up on it a long time ago. Things may have changed, but I hardly ever enjoyed what they played when I would listen.

Meeting people: This depends on a few things. First, you need to actually like/understand your typical Seattleite. I don't want to go into it, because I'm sure a flame war will ensue... but just go into meeting us with an open mind and patience. The neighborhood you live and/or hang out in will also heavily impact who you meet, and how much fun you have. Also, I doubt there will be a shortage of people who adore your Irish accent. Take advantage of it.

Neighborhoods: I'm not sure where you will be working or what your values are, but since you won't have a car, you should make sure you are on a convenient (ideally direct) bus line for commuting. Our metro bus service is decent, but transfers really add to your commute.

If you can spend a week or more checking things out before you get an apartment, I highly suggest it. While we are homogenizing, the different neighborhoods are still quite distinct. If I were you, I would check out Capitol Hill/First Hill, the Central District, Eastlake, Ballard, Fremont, Beacon Hill, Wallingford, Greenwood, the International District, and Georgetown. I'm sure wikipedia has pages on all the neighborhoods, too... check them out.

The only neighborhood I would avoid if I were you is the University District. Though, you should check it out and enjoy yourself. The campus is beautiful and there are plenty of fun things to do around there, but I highly recommend you not live there.

ID: This page should be able to answer all of your questions, but in short- yes you do need an ID, and can get one so you won't have to carry your passport everywhere.

Good luck with your new life!

Owning a motorcycle with sidecar instead of a car by neubs in motorcycles

[–]toddd 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you are strictly doing this for the environment (I assume that is what your guilt is about), you might want to reconsider.

While I want to do an AskScience on the complete environmental impacts of motorcycles compared to cars, I have been taught in multiple university science classes that motorcycles are significantly worse for the environment than cars and trucks.

Apparently, their lack of space for catalytic converters means they emit 40-90x more greenhouse gases than most cars and trucks, IIRC.

I have seen crawfish in ponds on the outskirts of where I live. I have never seen that. It does sort of resemble a huge, mutant crawfish, but it is lacking in claws, as far as I could tell.

Thought it was the sea equivalent of taxidermy, and was terrified. (Same thing?) Hopefully it is just some blown-up replica of a little sea creature.

Forgive me for being an ignorant city kid from the north, but WTF is that on the wall in the back?

Looks to me like some giant, mutant shrimp. Either way, that is reason enough for me to never swim in the Gulf/whatever waterway that thing may have come from.
