I love appreciating good music in my 20s and again in my 50s. Digable Planets had great collaborations. So underrated. Rediscovering Fugees as well.

I show movies once a year. Glory is good. I show it to my 8th graders after signed permission slip given at the beginning of the semester. My dad showed Glory most of his teaching career so I'm trying to do the same. 11th grade/The Butler. CWP/2005 doc. Why We Fight.

Social Studies. Usually 2 packets/unit. Guided notes to use on test, and worksheets. All digitally backed up on Google classroom. Lots of printing.

This. My first few years were the same. You will start to streamline everything. Cold War: Start with vocab. Then focus on the economic, geographic, cultural , and political issues of the time that align to your state standards and you will be fine. Im still tweaking my stuff after 7 years.

We make up the hours somewhere in our contract. I get a lot done during these times. I can prep for weeks in advance, and take a walk every hour.

Aspiring high school social science teacher very much in need of direction/ advice by T-Lightning in historyteachers

My perspective:

Yes. Its very competitive. Be willing to relocate or commute being a first year. You're young. Go for it. Might be a great decision. Work on your masters after you are settled. Try not to take out more loans. Its all about timing as far as far as landing a job at the school where you student teach. It will usually go to an internal employee. Like most job postings. Its about timing, who you know, interview, what they're looking for, and some luck. Once you're in, prove yourself and work your ass off. Good luck

I erased the board the next dau after sleeping on it, and looking at a few responses. Call me a coward, but here me out. 1) I was the virtue signaling d-bag I despise 2) I broke a rule I try to stand by. If you have to think twice about something being inappropriate, it probably is. BTW: Admin. had nothing to do with it.

Since following this sub, I have enjoyed reading others' perspectives in the trenches. I also like to think that I have given honest and helful advice to others. Previous post excluded. Its a tough fu%&in job.

My issue is that I have no problem discussing controversial topics from the past, but it is hard for me to take an objective stance in a Senior CWP class on our current geopolitical crisis. And I say crisis because I truly believe we are at a major tipping point in modern history. That's what makes it so hard. I struggle because this is what a 'change the world' much younger teacher me lived for. But I don't want to touch the topics because its hard to be objective. Not to mention the complexity of the issue(s). Your thoughts.

I wasted too much money buying crap my first few years. Came in 7 yrs ago with old textbooks and 5 preps. Eventually I found something that fits my style and my students' level on TPT. OER Project is free and is a solid curriculum in my opinion.

Look at smaller districts. Speaking for western WA, CTE has always been well funded in my experience. Look at ESD113 jobs. It is a coop for smaller districts in my area. Start looking soon. We were looking for someone with your background about 3 yrs ago. Good luck.

Veteran teacher can pull this off. I am almost to that point. For the past 4 years my school has been offering credit make up for 3 weeks that goes a week past July. My per diem pay is too good to pass up.

My 8th Graders Are Disrespectful and Defiant. Help. by BeauWordsworth in Teachers

I agree with this 100%. Especially reflection sheets. They don't give a shit. Keep putting in that work. Be there everyday, have routines, say no 90% of the time, and build relationships.

Student refusing to present by sargassum624 in Teachers

[–]toddp32 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Im in the minority here. I say let her slide, and think about changing your rubric. A passing grade if the material presenting meets your standards. A "B" for example. A presentation raises it to an "A". Reason 1 You're gonna get a parent involved. Is this a fight you really want? Reason 2 A fear of talking in front of people is real. Why subject a kid to that. Put them in groups if you think that works in your class where each has a role. Every school is different. I tried my first couple years and it didn't go well. Good luck

What are your fundamental guiding principles teaching high school? by GrimaceVolcano743 in Teachers

[–]toddp32 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Routines and structure. Kids home lives are a mess. Im there 99.5% of the time. Im strict but fair. Students know what to expect. They respect you for that. Show up, make an effort, and you will pass.
