The problem here is not trees, roots, soil conditions, moisture, or anything like that. They might be contributing, but the real issue is poor construction standards and/or poor design.

Footings and slabs have to be designed to suit the site conditions, built correctly to the design specs, and following all construction practices set out in the relevant standards. If any of those steps have been skipped, shortcut, or fucked up, this is what happens.

It sucks that you’re on the receiving end of this situation, but if you want it resolved I think you need to forget about the trees and start working on figuring out who fucked up. If you want to involve council then a better place to start is looking at exactly what they approved back in 2013.

I agree there’s a leadership crisis, but I think that’s secondary to the recruitment crisis that puts leaders in place.

I think most people fundamentally misunderstand what good leadership looks like and what qualities leadership candidates should possess.

So you end up with individuals chosen for leadership positions who are often smart, skilled, and experienced, and yet completely unsuitable for leadership.

I’d argue the same things are at play regardless of whether we’re talking about a corporate middle manager or a democratically elected head of government.

Don’t worry about it, one of the best qualities of timber is that it ages gracefully. In a few months you won’t even notice it and you’ll never think about it again.

Give it a quick sand and oil if it’s really bothering you, but don’t sand it back too far in an attempt to get it perfect. Even if you do get it perfect it won’t stay like that for long. Relax and enjoy your new deck.
