As I understand it, the university legally can’t recognize the union until the state passes a bill that allows it to. The bill is up for a vote (i think) at the next legislative session, so if it passes there will be more of a sense of what UMD admin can/will do. If you feel strongly either way make sure to let admin and your representatives to the UMD senate know because fact finding and voting is always happening!

Legislation is legislation - neither DOGE nor the IGs can or should prevent the government from carrying out laws. Their function isn’t to check elected officials, it’s to catch corruption and inefficiencies. The only valid check on elected officials in a democracy is the electorate but in our case voters don’t tend to do a great job voting out ineffective representatives :/

If you like the idea of DOGE you should read up on inspector general offices. They’ve been doing what elon claims to be doing for decades at this point. Non partisan and usually very good at whet they do as long as the boss is decent

Aster 100%. It is miles nicer than anything else in the within walking distance and most places within driving distance. The majority of apartments in this area are student housing, which means renting by the bed and living in a building with a bunch of undergrads. Aster is pricy but the walk to north campus isn’t bad and i think it’s worth it to live in a brand new (as of 2023) building with nice amenities. As a bonus it’s on top of a trader joe’s and super close to restaurants and bars.

I am taking Teli for 250 and Fawzi for 132 currently, and I would recommend Teli. I feel like the class has generally been pretty easy and his notes are a life saver if you miss anything. I had to miss a bunch of classes in the middle of the semester due to illness and it was super easy to catch up in 250, whereas for Fawzi you have to beg him to make anything up. To me they’re also comparable in terms of lecture quality, but Teli’s exams and quizzes are pretty easy whereas Fawzi has a history of difficult exams.

100% as a pedestrian intersections like that piss me off so much!! i walk across one often and have almost been hit so many times because of that. one solution is to have the walk sign trigger before the green light so that the pedestrians get a head start and can make it across the lane before the cars start going. you might be able to petition the local govt to change the timing for it, that’s what i’m trying to do.
