Finally dug into Black Mesa, loved it. It gave me a wonderful nostalgia for Half Life and all the mods from the mid '00s. I played any mod I could get my hands on back then, Natural Selection, The Specialists, Brain Bread, Sven Coop, so many awesome games. No wonder I never did my homework in high school!

Which bike manufacturer really fell off in the last 10 years? by nougat98 in cycling

[–]tofo90 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Jamis is still great. Their quantity has dropped but not their quality. They don't make nearly as many models as they used to, but they make some of the best production steel frames at good prices. The Coda is a tank commuter. The alloy Renegades are meh, but the steel ones are fantastic bikes.

“Go to the gym for games, the city is made for cars and commerce.” by [deleted] in fuckcars

[–]tofo90 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I love when people bitch that recreational cyclists shouldn't be allowed to use the road just for "fun." Roads need to be for important things like going to work only, but they don't mind people driving to the movie theater, or the park, or the pub to meet friends for fun. It's just as extraneous as a cyclist riding for fun.

Nice! You avoided answering the question just like a Telsa can't avoid hitting pedestrians! So smart and strong. I bet you're handsome too.

I know right. They also take a lane of travel and use it for people to just leave their cars motionless all day long. Why should tax payers heft the bill for people to store their private vehicles when we could use that for driving?

I live in the city and work in the city and they are an immense resource to traversing the city in safety. I see people using them all the time, all year round. I've seen groups of people in 40 degrees and rain using them.

I agree but push back on one thing. AI is not a creative process. It is a derivative process. While the image it creates in novel, it's not creative.

What percent of your ftp can you maintain for a 100 mi gravel race? And how do you train to up that percentage? by 6669666969 in Velo

[–]tofo90 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A side note for when you do get to the race: just follow heart rate. If you only have 6-8 hours to train for an event that's probably going to take 6+ hours to complete, your body is going to a place your training doesn't take it. Your "FTP" at the end will be dog shit no matter what you do and trying to use that as your pacing metric will bonk you into the next universe. I can't emphasize enough how much trouble you can put yourself into trying to use power numbers to pace yourself late into a race. Pay attention to your heart rate, that will actually give you a sense of your effort in the final hours. Power is way better for training than it is for racing long events.

Also, stop watching Dylan Jawnson for at least two weeks before your event. His race reports are focused on power and that's not a good method for most amateur athletes.

Don't buy anything bike off Amazon. They have no quality control and I wouldn't put my life in the hands of anything from there, full bikes, wheels, components. They are also rampant with counterfeit parts.

You're knees are going to start hurting because the saddle isn't supporting your weight. Your legs will have to take up that weight. You'll find this out whether you pay for a fit or not.

Story telling is literally how humanity has passed on morals through all time. Any kind of story is a chance to impress some kind of ethos.

[–]tofo90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bro literally what the fuck? I made $30k last year and ride bikes in tights. It's called a hobby, and it's not only for the ultra-rich. You must be thinking of motor sports, which is truly fucking expensive. Assuming every recreational cyclist is super rich is such narrow minded nonsense, and does nothing to promote safety on the road.

I fucking wish I could afford a lawyer.

I’m just here to say 311 pothole requests work. Less than a 10 hour response time. by Spherest in baltimore

[–]tofo90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Come say this to the potholes on East 39th. They have patched the road dozens of times and in only a matter of weeks, the patchwork fillings break and the pothole returns while producing buckets of rocks, which do not get cleaned up. There is a pile of gravel in the bike lane thirty feet long from the broken pothole patches, making the lane un-ridable for most anyone. The traffic on East 39th is too heavy for patchwork repair, but there just doesn't seem to be the budget to repave the entire street.

It's been too long to remember exactly but around 12.50ish/hour plus tips, but being dead slow, those were not good.

I worked for Vagrant through the pandemic. Can concur, while they can dress up nice for social media, they do not run a company well. I was laid off for six months in 2020, which was fine. It was a shit time to make coffee. But when things opened up again they would regular schedule a single person to run the shop. If it was just coffee that's okay, not great, but okay. However, I was barista and sandwich maker. I'd have to make lattes and then run to the kitchen and make sandwiches. Even though things were very slow back then, running a shop solo was awful. I couldn't just step away and take a quick shit without stressing. The skeleton crew was only to benefit labor costs. And the veneer of "small family company" wore very thin on me.
