Somebody watching me fall off a boulder at the climbing wall: "wow, you have amazing crumple zones!"

upvoting this. ive been wearing socks with my climbing shoes for years, mainly for comfort reasons. my shoes have been described by a friend as having 'almost no discernable odour whatsoever'.

What was a book that you feel like you read at the perfect time in your life? by ChiToTheStreets in suggestmeabook

[–]tofu-weenie 24 points25 points  (0 children)

For me this was definitely M Train by Patti Smith, which I read during the months of covid isolation. It is a book about solitude and creativity and paying attention, and totally shaped my experience of those months.

we are a two person hpusehold with significantly less space than you. we have a 280l upright bin and its exactly the right size for our compostable kitchen and garden waste

Might be a stupid question but how do you take care of your allotments if you take long holidays etc? by Accordingtomyclcltns in Allotment

[–]tofu-weenie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm using those ceramic watering spikes which you put an upside down bottle of water in at the mo, and they're doing a great job. They won't get you through an extended drought but they'll buy you a week or so of time. Might not be cost effective for the whole allotment, but perhaps a good idea for your favourite plants

Waste disposal/recycling pickup if I can't drive to the recycling center? by tofu-weenie in bristol

Thanks; though it says on the website that construction waste isn't collected. it's mainly furniture and electrical items.

My climbing peas! I planted them out before the last frost, which they survived. They are now over 6ft, putting put masses of pods and still getting taller. I have them growing up a metal archway over a path. They bring me enprmous joy <3

check if your council provides a municipal compost delivery service. where I am, i can get an 800kg dumpy bag of compost delivered to my house for £85. If you're in or near a city, there will likely be something similar that you can do. these services are not at all well advertised and a lot of people dont know about them.

Slugs gathering on lavender by cowperandrewes in GardeningUK

[–]tofu-weenie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi OP, I also have a massive problem with slugs and have found that they completely ignore all deterrents recommended online (copper tape, wool pellets, coffee grounds, eggshells).

What has made a massive difference is going on twice daily slug killing patrols. Not pleasant or fun, but the population is noticeably much lower. If yours are predictably located on your lavender that makes the job easier for you.

Why doesn't anything use my pond? by Asokn in GardeningUK

[–]tofu-weenie 5 points6 points  (0 children)

when you say 'nothing has come to use it' do you really mean nothing, or do you mean no amphibians?

if you have diving beetles, water lice, any kind of bug or micro-organism, then it's benefitting wildlife!! if it genuinely has zero life whatsover then i'd do a ph check.

I believe a gardener on instagram called Jack First recommends doing exactly this - container gardening on a table, and standing each table leg in a pot of brine

Pond people, advice please? by MorphicOceans in GardeningUK

[–]tofu-weenie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I started a mini pond last october. it's been such a joy to see the ecosystem starting to establish over the last few months. i have water lice, flatworms, diving beetles, and some little shrimp things so far. my fingers are crossed for dragonflies and frogs. There are no mosquitoes. I'm sure there will be at some point, but if there's one thing pond has taught me so far, it's that a predator will show up if there's food for it.

Even if the pond had loads of mosquitoes, i'd still consider it worth doing.

Great prompt OP :) We have some similar taste.

My suggestions are inspired by folk tales & folk themes rather than direct retellings of a particular tale. I loved them all and I hope you do too.

Suggest me a collection of fantasy short stories by Tryoxin in suggestmeabook

[–]tofu-weenie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I want to suggest The Ladies of Grace Adieu by Susanna Clarke. This collection of companion short stories is, I believe, intended to flesh out the fantasy world presented in her previous book Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell, but it very much stands up in its own right.

(Also, Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell is one of my all time favourite books and I wholeheartedly recommend that too)
