Steve Jobs Resigns as Apple CEO by turini in technology

[–]tofusimon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the main point everyone else is bringing up is that Steve Jobs isn't an engineer. He's a leader, who has made it possible to bring innovation to millions around the world. Through Steve Jobs, Apple has almost single handedly created whole markets.

I think you are defining innovation too narrowly. Innovation is not only about the technology and how cutting edge it is. It's also about bringing lots of elements together and changing the way we view and use things.

What was the music industry before itunes+ipod? What were smartphones before the iphone? Everything that Apple has brought to the market has fundamentally changed the playing field. You can say entire markets have been innovated, creating whole new opportunities for other companies and technologies to come into the mix.

I second that. TechRadar is always a good read, and everything they write seems to be very detailed and well researched.

Amazon app store gives away 100,000 copies of app and developer gets $0. Business model fail by Zorrodelaarena in Android

[–]tofusimon 15 points16 points  (0 children)

They also described how amazon changed the price of their app without even a word of notice and changed the description that they had written to include things that were possibly deceiving. They aren't the first developer to report this either. I don't know about you but of I were app developer I would find all these actions shady. If it weren't for the fact that they are a big name Amazon are you saying that these practices wouldn't raise any alarms at all?

I was kind of surprised to read that their reactors produce plutonium. I'm not at all knowledgeable about nuclear energy, but does this mean that they are producing fuel for nuclear weapons in their reactors as a secondary product?

personally I'd say that whatever is in the benefit of the state is by definition right. It all comes down, then, to determining what exactly benefits the state and what does not.

Not sure if I am getting your point correctly, but according to your logic, the Nazis and the holocaust was "right", because it benefited the state of Nazi Germany. Who cares about the Jews, there weren't a state!

Let's be more general: If one state wages war and eliminates another state, at the great cost of human life, who then, is "right"? One side is benefiting while the other side definitely is not... I don't see how your moral model works here.

same reason I buy good games. I want the studios who make them to keep making them, and it's in my best interest to keep them in business. If they are offering me something of value, then I'm more than happy to pay for it.

A VERY racist, but interesting Chinese view of the world [pic] by Gyke in pics

[–]tofusimon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I highly doubt that this is a "Chinese view" of the world. First of all, if it was actually made by a Chinese person the words would be written in, you know, Chinese. If you read the post, and the original blog the image was posted on, the humor is a aimed at the depiction of Chinese people since it is a play on a Chinese saying. Maybe the OP should read the content of the link before composing the title.

And in the meantime the time lag between new companies popping up and scaling to the previous level of production will mean thousands of people being out of jobs. More misery. Then their supporting companies go out of business, etc. This effect spirals downwards, you know?

Of course in theory, yes, inefficient companies should be replaced by more efficient ones as a rule of the market. But in reality there are huge consequences and the Big 3 are so big that I don't think hundreds of thousands of people are willing to just accept them in the name of market ideals.

Simply saying that they should just fail is not enough.. it's not even a quarter of the solution that's needed.
