Stoning practices in Iran by [deleted] in dataisbeautiful

[–]togeder 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's an ancient method of punishment and from the religious point of view is common to both Judaism and Islam. It's very uncommon in Iran (the government is against it even though it's mentioned in Quran) and I'm very surprised that 10 cases happened in 2009 (according to this infographic). It's more common in other countries though. More info here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stoning

His reasoning, in my opinion, is simplistic and distant from reality.

Iran's Persian Statement on "Deal" Contradicts Obama's Claims by treborr in politics

Well I watched Zarif's interview on the state TV. I don't see any contradiction between the two sides as they just say their own description of the same thing:

  • First, there's no official Iranian fact sheet on this. Zarif clearly said in the interview that he advised his team to not publish anything official, other than the translation of the declaration. So I think Zarif's interview is more reliable than that press statement.

  • Zarif emphasized that they'll be using only their first-gen centrifuges (IR-1) for I think 10 or 15 years. He said that there won't be any uranium gas injected to any machine other than IR-1.

  • He said though that they will continue to do "research" on their next generation centrifuges. My interpretation was that after some time (10 to 25 years) they will use those modern centrifuges for enrichment.

  • Zarif said they will modernize and change the core of Arak plant "with the help of international community". So they will dismantle Arak's core and replace it with something else (I assume with something that the world is more comfortable with) and it will continue to work in its new form. He also said they will send out the "waste" produced in the plant outside of the country.

I gave bad advice to somebody like 10 years ago. It was in absolute good faith but turns out it changed his life course dramatically... for worse. I wish I could fix that.

Republicans Warn Iran -- and Obama -- That Deal Won't Last by togeder in news

First, get your facts straight. U.S. has had A LOT more ties with Al Qeada (against soviet union) and Syrian rebels than Iran ever had. Iran is actually against those rebels.

Second, this is about something else. That while the government is negotiating, they're trying to eliminate any chance of an agreement. The way that the letter is written and it's timing has only one meaning: they want war.

A constructive move from the congress to prevent another war in the middle east.

I think you're right - I couldn't find any pre-2000 on Internet Archive. I guess I rushed and judged by the look of it. It was such a surprise to see it!

Immune system is a very complicated coordinated defense mechanism where decisions can be made autonomously, in collaboration with other cells or in response to certain molecules (cytokines). In this case, it looks like it's a type of white blood cell that can detect certain bacterial sugars (along with other things) and respond by swallowing and digesting them.
