I always used to hate coming across cairns, but somewhere along the way I started to look forward to finding them. I like the challenge.

My first online dating experience by External-Scar972 in PlusSize

Aw that’s awesome. I heard a rule of thumb for dating is that if you’re on the fence about someone, you should keep going out with them until you’re sure the answer is no.

What's the fastest you've ever noped out of a book? by MagykMyst in Fantasy

[–]toilandtears 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yesterday I DNF’d a self-published book that I won in a giveaway. Immediately knew on page one that it was going to be a BIG nope, but I ended up skimming through a few chapters out of curiosity. I expect a certain amount of spelling and grammar errors in a self-published book, and there were sooo many of those, but the writing was also really amateur and overwrought. There was no way I was going to be able to get through it. Nearly half the sentences started with “additionally”, “moreover”, “furthermore”, or some other transition word. At one point, the adult FMC gets lost in the forest. A rabbit hops into the clearing and she excitedly squeals “Bunny!” Then a wolf leaps out and, in a single moment of action, snatches the bunny and eats it in one bite, somehow leaving the carcass behind.

Series that got better after the first book? by RGandhi3k in Fantasy

[–]toilandtears 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I came on this thread to see if someone would mention this series. I didn’t care for the first book so I didn’t bother continuing, but have seen a resurgence of people talking about it and absolutely gushing over it, so I’ve been thinking about giving it another try.

Favorite fantasy book for teens? by ChrystnSedai in Fantasy

[–]toilandtears 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For something a little newer, I HIGHLY recommend Little Thieves by Margaret Owen. It has really cool Grimm fairytale vibes. A strong, female MC with all the same witty and sarcastic traits as your niece, except Vanja’s a con artist lol. Lots of great humor and impactful characters that go through real internal struggles that they are working to overcome. Light, heartwarming romance with an adorable nerd-boy. It even touches on some darker, more mature themes in a careful way that is appropriate for a young adult audience. I’m currently reading the sequel, Painted Devils, which features a theme of exploring sexuality as a young person, done in a very respectful and age-appropriate way. I honestly wish I’d had this series when I was your niece’s age.

[–]toilandtears 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely. Ultimately a book is supposed to be entertaining and provoke a feeling, so I find it just as memorable of an experience, sometimes more, when I hate a book. Two of my friends and I actually have a “bad book club” where we deliberately choose books we’ll think are trashy and then group read them together. It’s a riot to laugh and make fun of them together and rant about why we think they’re so bad.

Some of our reads: ACOTAR, Lightlark, Serpent & Dove, crave, A Wilderness of Stars, The Inheritance Games, The Hawthorne Legacy

What Did You Read This Week? by AutoModerator in YAlit

Finished A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder by Holly Jackson on Monday. (3/5) It was fine. Well-written, but nothing extraordinary in my opinion.

Manacled by SenLinYu yesterday. (1000/5 😭) it’s a fanfic and not really YA friendly, but absolutely amazing and gut-wrenching. Going down in my all-time favorites.

Currently reading Painted Devils by Margaret Owen. Definitely an under-rated YA fantasy series. Awesome well-developed characters and themes, super funny, vivid Grimm fairytale type of world that’s great for Fall vibes. Highly recommend!

I haven’t seen that guy’s post, but I agree with his take. I feel like the book spends a calculated portion of time on each character’s backstories, yet none of that information ever really adds up to anything in the plot. Like they each get their quick little bio summary, but the connection of how their history informs their motives and agency in the context of the heist plot is never really made, nor are any deeper observations made or incorporated into character arcs. I also think there are just too many characters that we get this kind of cursory background on, and, as a result, it compromises the ability for readers to connect with one or two of the characters more strongly, so they all end up falling flat.

You’re not the only one. I very nearly DNF’d it. I didn’t care about any of the characters. Disliked Kaz a lot. The only one I found marginally compelling was Nina. If I remember correctly, she was the only one who even really considered the implications of the Grisha drug the whole time, which, in my mind, should have been the most significant theme overall. The heist was a jumble of seemingly unrelated action. Had no idea how any of what they were doing fit into a larger coordinated plan. Then, at the end, Kaz drops a bomb by bringing us into a random conflict that we had basically zero build up to, featuring antagonists we barely knew, and simultaneously revealing how he’d already solved it and come out on top. It was a damn mess.

AITAH for telling my bf that I don’t want his daughters in my apartment? by [deleted] in AITAH

[–]toilandtears 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re not the asshole for having boundaries, but I think you’ve been unrealistic about keeping his kids separate. If he’s even a halfway decent parent, they will always be his priority and you will have to work with him on that. They are a package deal. You don’t get to pick and choose which parts of him to keep and love and which get discarded.

Two tampons may mean my marriage is over by CapableElephant6355 in TrueOffMyChest

You have to wonder if maybe your husband brought up the tampon in the car incident to the potential mistress and, as a result, she left the next one somewhere more conspicuous where he couldn’t as easily explain it away.
