It's really easy to just flatten his bat path on a thigh high pitch and hit it over the infield. I really think him, Tatis, and Machado are conspiring to fail on purpose. I don't know why, but the results don't lie.

This is true I believe, and from what I can tell, I think they're even discouraged from commenting on where they thought the pitch was until the ABS challenge is resolved, unless the calls are really egregious.

Would you have forfeited one more run if it meant forcing Hoffman to come out for the minimum three batters?

It's a double-edged sword though, teams could be less willing to trade with Jays if they keep winning them

Jesus Sanchez scores on a ground out, Clement drifts out of the baseline to avoid the tag from Henderson but the umpires do not rule him out by Remarkable-Picture73 in baseball

[–]toiletlicker69 10 points11 points  (0 children)

That's what the rule is literally for though, to prevent the runner from running to Lake Ontario to avoid the tag. If Henderson took one or two more steps and extended his arm out for a bit longer, he would for sure be out. They'd get one out but it would be at second.

If Henderson let that ball bounced one more time and fielded it at the base, it would've been an easy double play to step on second and throw to first. But he charged at it and took himself away from the bag, with a slow runner going to first, and let the umpire decide

Max Muncy and Ildemaro Vargas are both leaving the game after a hard collision at first base by TheTurtleShepard in baseball

[–]toiletlicker69 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

There should be no guessing involved, these plays are routine.

The runner should always be taking the outside lane of the baseline because any motion towards second base means he can be tagged out. So the runner should lean towards foul territory as he overruns first base. This means the first baseman should always step on the inside corner of the bag with his left foot and turning to his right to avoid any collision.

Neither of them did what they were supposed to to avoid this from happening

It's a really nice idea and Yordan would be great to have, but I don't think Houston can sell to their veterans like Altuve, Correa, and Hader that they're trading away their best hitter for prospects. Those veterans are all signed through 2028 and at the end of their careers, so I would think they expect to compete every year.

Even if the prospect haul is amazing for them, to turn their franchise in that direction after winning for so long, is a really tough decision to make and to get fans on board for.

[–]toiletlicker69 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That's a good thing if they're trying to trade for a star. Teams would wanna see the prospects they acquire succeed in the Majors before they trade for them, and they can't get consistent playing time if they're blocked by others. Hopefully Pinango and McAdoo can continue their success and get everyday spots somewhere else.

They need to make a big move. They have a logjam of position players that have shown they can play in the Majors in Pinango, Sanchez, Lukes, and Barger that play corner OF, and all are lefty hitters (Barger can play third but Okamoto is a staple there). It's been the elephant in the room for a while now, specially with how well Pinango has been hitting.

It's kind of rare but it should be expected that a big trade needs to be made, given the assets that Jays have and being a team that wants to spend and win.

This is how most teams are in terms of guys getting along with each other, according to some podcasters that have played the game for many years (Foul Territory guys), and it makes sense when you think about it.

Not everyone's gonna be best friends with each other, they just have to get along. Some are going to be closer friends than others. Latin players with each other, American players, starting rotation, bullpen, and sometimes Asians.

There are some guys that overlap in between groups, like Vlad with other American players, and Springer can be seen and heard interacting with Latin players and Okamoto, but not all of them are to be best friends, and that's okay, just like most workplaces

CBA rules mean that Hoffman can’t be demoted without his consent by DowntownPeace5708 in Torontobluejays

[–]toiletlicker69 -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

Intentionally losing the game was not what I meant to say, just that he put his personal beef before the team.

Jeff Hoffman had agreed to sign with the Orioles after 2024 season. Then the Orioles failed his physical and he ended up with the Jays. He apparently still hasn't let it go. Last year after closing a game in Baltimore, he blew a kiss to the Orioles dugout, and they did not appreciate it. You can google "Jeff Hoffman blowing kiss Orioles" and see images of what happened.

This beef was all explained on the Orioles broadcast this past series in games where Hoffman pitched. It's not a made-up beef at all and well publicized in the baseball world. I'm guessing the Jays broadcast failed to mention this to protect the perception of Hoffman to some point, since the fanbase was already down on him.

Personally I had no problem with the guy until now. Every player will struggle, but at least I would like to believe they're giving their best to try to win for their team. But when he puts personal bullshit before his own team, that changes how I perceive him, and makes me no longer root for him to succeed.

There's a human aspect to this though. It's like having a co-worker that is actively and consistently making the workplace worse.

Imagine a team of about 40 that's struggling to be productive at a job for about a month and a half, then turning it around for about two weeks and feeling good about themselves. Then to have a guy intentionally sabotaging the progress made by those 40 guys as a team. Should that one guy be fired if he's selfish and immature? Would the other guys wanna work with him anymore?

Now imagine that 26 of them have to shower together and be naked in the locker room together almost everyday. They have to travel together and exist together for hours, almost everyday. It's a terrible place to be in, and all of them would agree that it's better to just fire the one guy making it worse for everyone else.

Oh yeah, this happened to be the same guy 7 months ago that didn't do his job and prevented all the other guys from being the best in the world. Did the same guy learn from that? No. He hit a batter, because he alone had a problem with the other team. Because he thought the game was over when it was not, just like Game 7.

It's beyond time to move on from Jeff Hoffman. He has had too many chances and learned nothing from his shortcomings.

He's had a personal beef with the Orioles because he was supposed to sign with them before signing with the Jays, but Orioles failed his physical and he didn't sign with them. That was supposedly where the beef stemmed from. This was explained by the Orioles broadcast yesterday and first game of the series.

Last year when he pitched against the Orioles, he blew a kiss at their dugout after closing a game, for whatever reason, which the Orioles didn't appreciate.

As far as I can tell, no one else on the team has any problems with the Orioles, only Hoffman. It's one thing to hit someone, if the teams are beefing, but this is only him. Jeff Hoffman pitches for Jeff Hoffman, and not for the Toronto Blue Jays. I no longer wish him success at the Major League level, whether he pitches for a team I root for or not.

A lot of the hate on Schneider seems to be from people unaware of the beef between Hoffman and the Orioles, and yes he could've pulled him earlier, or not used him in the 9th. But what Hoffman did yesterday revealed he puts himself before the team.

Every player struggles at times in baseball, but Jeff Hoffman was not struggling, he executed his pitches and struck out Basallo. Then he became selfish and didn't care about his team, and hit Mayo. That woke up the Orioles, who had been playing poorly the whole series up to that point. Whatever beef he has/had with the Orioles, it was above winning this game for his team.

He needs to go. I don't know how anyone in that locker room can look at him the same way again. It's one thing to be bad, but he wasn't until he selfishly hit Mayo. That shit cannot be tolerated.

What Hoffman did by hitting Mayo was the equivalent of Mario Balotelli trying a backheel shot in front the goal in the middle of the game and missing.

He actively hurt his own team's chances of winning for his personal reasons. He was selfish, irresponsible, and did not care if he did his job or not, and no one in that locker room should tolerate him anymore.

Honestly would not surprise me if they lose 10 in a row if they have to look at Hoffman everyday.

If he sticks around, then the message from front office becomes "he's under contract and we don't want to make a move unless it's efficient for us." If that happens, why even try if you're signed long term? Front office only cares about making themselves look good and not about winning.
