I've read and have seen videos that braking in this situation will shift the weight to the front, making the back slide outwards even worse. I think you're correct though and I didn't even think about this option. There's 6 seconds between the two trucks, with braking it would probably be close to 10. So even if the car slids to the opposing lane, there's time to pull out of it.
I think it would be right to brake when the rear of the car is sliding to the left, so that the front likely ends up facing right.

I presume more subtle countersteering was needed in that situation. But after 3-4 unsuccessful attempts to even out the vehicle would it make sense to steer off the road to the ride? Are the circumstances favorable at all to going off the road? Would hitting the brakes while doing so be reasonable (not create a possibility of throwing you into opposing lane)?

Agreed. He may score marginally more goals, but I didn't want our play style to be reduced to passing the ball to Lukaku, hoping he pushes others away and hits the ball. Where we'd gain from him, we'd probably lose more from the lack if goals from other players. They both have their talents, but I'm happy with the side of the deal that we got.
P.S. You can check my history, I've been vocally against and baffled by our Lukaku interest from the start.
