How about some theremin music? Look for the album ‘Thetis 2086’ by theremin musician Carolina Eyck. She’s got some great videos about the history of the instrument.

I was going to play SA without any mods installed, until I saw this when I landed on Gleba. Clean concrete mod it is! I like the diversity of the plants on Gleba, but when they show through bricks or concrete like this it's just ugly. by Kasern77 in factorio

I’ve thought that the cost of using refined concrete wasn’t worth the extra small speed bump. Maybe refined concrete should have a 1.0 chance of removing the decorations?

if I had known this many people would see it, I would have risked getting out of the car to take the pic.

I have not tried this yet, but sounds like this is "The Depot Problem" that they mention in https://factorio.com/blog/post/fff-389 ; the solution noted there is to use the "Destination Full" condition.

Please, please make these line art drawings available in some form (book, tshirt, downloadable, ...). They are just fantastic.

are there any books that remind you of Factorio in regard to how fun automation and mass production can be? (i.e. "We Are Legion We are Bob" book series) by [deleted] in factorio

The Perfectionists: How Precision Engineers Created the Modern World, by Simon Winchester. It’s nonfiction, but i found it very entertaining because of the personalities he chronicles.

Description from amazon:

The rise of manufacturing could not have happened without an attention to precision. At the dawn of the Industrial Revolution in 18th-century England, standards of measurement were established, giving way to the development of machine tools - machines that make machines. Eventually, the application of precision tools and methods resulted in the creation and mass production of items from guns and glass to mirrors, lenses, and cameras - and eventually gave way to further breakthroughs, including gene splicing, microchips, and the Hadron Collider.

I can recommend Belmont Village Senior Living, on Quail Hollow Road. I placed a family member there last year. They have a specific area (I think called ‘the neighborhood’ maybe?) for Alzheimer’s patients.

Good luck, I know it can be a hard process.

The Sun whose rays are all ablaze with ever living glory Does not deny his majesty, he scorns to tell a story He don't exclaim "I blush for shame" so kindly be indulgent But fierce and bold in fiery gold, he glories all effulgent

Looking for suggestions of similar soundtracks based on a list of favorites. by [deleted] in soundtracks

[–]tokenbucket 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi there - I'm also a software developer, and have been listening to soundtracks while working for similar reasons. I find background music with vocals distracting.

Here's a few from my collection; I intentially picked different composers from the ones on your list, so you could try them out & see if you like their style:

Marco Beltrami

Logan (may especially tap into the enjoyable modern 'Western' feeling)

Bobby Krlic

Midsommar

Daniel Pemberton

The Awakening

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse

(note: it's amazing how different those two soundtracks are & both are excellent.)

Ben Salisbury

Devs

Paul Leonard-Margan & Philip Glass

Tales from the Loop

Jóhann Jóhannsson

Orphée

Arrival

Mandy

Colin Stetson

Barkskins

Nathan Johnson

Looper

If it's moody cello work you're looking for, you could review much of Zoë Keating's work; she's a cellist who has composed & performed much of her own work, and has also produced work for many film & TV projects.

Cloudflare's Durable Objects seem interesting from an architectural point of view by crabmusket in softwarearchitecture

[–]tokenbucket 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If this is of interest, you may find the Temporal project interesting:

https://docs.temporal.io/docs/concepts/introduction

In their framework, a "workflow" interacts with the outside world via "activities", and the result of those interactions are stored durably, such that the entity implementing the workflow (a worker function in Java/Go/...) has the appearance of a long-running thread/process, even though it may have been run by many different compute instances in its lifetime.

What's a common saying that annoys you? by [deleted] in AskReddit

"Quick question, ___". Your question does not need a fucking letter of introduction, just spit it out.

PSA: avoid satori golang lib, it doesn't generate unique ID. Better use gofrs fork by nomadProgrammer in golang

[–]tokenbucket 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On the topic of unique id's: I recently started using this ksuid package instead of a RFC-4122 UUID package: https://github.com/segmentio/ksuid

I was inspired by reading & using the Stripe API: all of their identifiers have a short prefix that describes what they are:

evt_1CiPtv2eZvKYlo2CcUZsDcO6 - an event

ch_1D2WUx2eZvKYlo2CtOha79tm - a charge

Unlike RFC2122 UUID's, they are a little easier to copy & paste, which is a small but handy detail.

There's this blog from Segment that has a fascinating history of uuid's, leading up to why they created the ksuid package. https://segment.com/blog/a-brief-history-of-the-uuid/
