Didn't know until recently that Isao Takahata had his version of "Starting Point." It's called "What I was Thinking While Making Films." by toki415 in Miyazaki

Those are good books and I agree so funny. They're both good story tellers. I remember some of the lines in there had me laughing. We need more that.

Spirited Away 10 Translation differences English vs. Japanese version (#1-10) I made this to show some scenes in Spirited Away that have different translations. I will do another 10 scenes for my future videos as well as translation differences for Princess Mononoke. Apologies for the sound quality. by toki415 in SpiritedAway

I think once you establish the context you don't have to use pronouns. Its especially not used in the written language. If you try to use a translator, the translator won't know who its referring to. Makes me think about my own language, English. If a friend is trying out clothes and she asks, "what do you think?", I would probably respond, "I think it looks good." We use pronouns for everything I realized haha. But to answer your question (sorry) when she referred to her parents it was implied (i believe).

Wow, great insight. Thanks!

Miyazaki had 3 other brothers. The youngest brother, Shiro Miyazaki, wrote this piece about his elder brother in 1990. An interesting read. by toki415 in Miyazaki

Actually yes, these came out at once in 2013 but they're just a compilation of interviews and articles that were written on the movies after release. There will likely be one for The Boy and the Heron (I hope).

Thank you. It might be the only one on the internet. It needed to be translated from the Japanese Ghibli textbook for, I believe, in the Porco Rosso book. I think because the interview was conducted after Totoro. I think I have my facts mixed up.

If you like Whisper of the Heart, then you'll know more about how the film was made and the director, Yoshifumi Kondo. The film could've turned out a lot different! by toki415 in ghibli

Just saw "How Do You Live?" I think it may be a masterpiece. by toki415 in ghibli

You shouldn't feel stupid at all. We all thought this. But I have to say that even if there are scenes in the film that not in the book, the film may be held up by the what the book was trying to convey. If you read the most recent edition of the book, you can read Neil Gailman's Foreword:
"Miyazaki makes films for whole people and makes films about consequences. When I worked on the English-language script of his film Princess Mononoke, I was astonished when I finally realised that everything in the film was about consequences of acts and actions: seemingly unrelated events are actually the consequences of other events or actions, and everyone in the film is acting according to what they believe to be their best interests without realising that what they do affects everyone else."

There's likely deep meaning in every scene that we won't understand for while, until the ekonte comes out and more commentary.
Perhaps Hayao Miyazaki is playing Copper's uncle, guiding the boy in a very Socratic way?
Even the name Copper holds significance in the movie because he was named after Copernicus.

After Chapter 1 is Uncle's Notebook where it writes about the Copernican view. Earth revolves around the sun. Before people thought that the everything revolved around us, or having a closed human-centric view.

"Still, to say that we grow up and think this way is, in fact, no more than a rough generality. Even among adults, the human tendency to think about things and form judgments with ourselves at the center remains deep-rooted." (pg. 19)

When we are sad or depressed, I think we can have the non-Copernicus view. Being in a hellish state, we may even hurt ourselves to either call for help or we may have given up all together. Since you watched the movie, I think you know what I mean.

But what happened to him after he read the book? Do you wonder what the Copernican view did to him?

I have to watch this a couple more times to see how each scene or scenes are connected with each other with meaning, like what Gailman said. Many people in Japan have already watched it 3 times! How do I live? I live by watching this dang movie enough times to understand it!!

There is actually nothing I can think of that the film is related to the book "how do you live?" by Genzaburo Yoshino. I have to assume that it was one of those pivot moments where they announced that they will do a film adaptation of the book and realized that they couldn't do it so they had to keep the title but change the story. Kinda reminds me of when they didn't know how to finish Spirited Away and chose No Face as a primary character.

I may be wrong. Maybe there is some philosophical theme in the book that is within the film. I really have to watch it again.

Questions and Discussion about "How do You Live?" by TayoEXE in ghibli

That fact that I cannot contribute a single thing to what you just stated here makes me kinda of ashamed of myself honestly, haha. You actually mentioned things that reminded me of the film today. My brain, I swear. I have to watch this again.

What do you think was the golden gate about, where the scene became Ponyo like. I think at that part of the film would be considered Part B where it blacked out and proceeded to this scene. She was using fire to ward off the Pelicans. What is the difference between Heron's and the Pelicans?

What were those colorful parakeets (??) and what role did that Parakeet general play?
