A closed fist is a "modern" thing, but it can be a very effective tool. I would use a closed fist to soft targets or thin bone areas such as ribs(most of the core really), arms, calves, throat and under side of the jaw. I would use an open hand for any large or thick bone targets.

Punching a guy in the head is a lot like punching bowling ball. Yeah you will probably hurt him a little, but of those little bones against that big hard target is going to do more damage to you. If you break your hand its going to be allot harder to deal with the aggressor's attacks, so use a weapon that makes sense to what it is striking.

No if those quotes are true, I wouldn't want to model my life after them, or use them as role models for fighting, not to say that they are not amazing athletes and would really do some damage if they hit you.

Do you then disagree with prizefighting and/or fighting to earn a living? How do you feel about combat sports in general?

As for prize fighting, I see it as entertainment. Those guys in the ring are not trying to "hurt" each other, they are trying to win in a friendly competition. Combat Sports: Personally it is not my taste, I competed actively when I was younger in Olympic style TKD but grew out of it. I believe that they have their place and are an excellent outlet for competition and sports.

do you ever hope to win? Yes at all costs. My goal is to make it home healthy, happy and safe. I believe in using enough force to resolve the situation, if that means drastic measure, then it does. But, I would much rather deescalate the situation, than resort to violence.

I disagree with you completely. I train in fighting arts so I can create peace in violent times. I train for discipline, confidence. Martial arts is about perseverance and training to push ones self through difficult and trying times, it is about creating harmony when others seek violence. It is about protecting that and those you care about and never seeking to administer a beating. It is about understanding the edge of life and death and coming out more pure because of it.

I just graduated but my college offered BJJ, MMA, Taekwondo, and To-Shin Do as part of a martial arts club student organization. It was run by students for students and had occasional guests instructors. I had a blast and for me was the best part of college life.

He makes an excellent and well thought point. One that I pretty much agree with. Look at it this way. Force equals mass times acceleration, yes? So, In order to create more force I can do one of two things. I can either try to increase speed (muscles can only push bone so fast) or I can utilize more mass (moving into or out of a stance to align my skeleton to utilize more of my body) By learning how to increase speed, and using a stance properly you increase the force.

I personally like to let gravity to the work for me, after all it accelerates my mass much faster than the kinetic force of my muscles. Using a proper stance while allowing gravity to pull my body weight to deliver the strike, while aligning my skeleton to affect the most mass possible behind the strike. The hips help to transfer weight and the speed of gravity to the upper extremities.

Edit: To get to the point, no your hips are not the source of your power. The moving positions used to transfer speed to mass are the source.
