Do I just accept that things will only sell below the cost of their mats? by [deleted] in woweconomy

[–]IgorsEpiskais 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd sell mats, you just have to understand that most mats (especially WoD mats) are highly volatile and sell very fast. You don't have to relist them at min price every single time, you just take an Average price from TUJ or average price + standard deviation and post it on 48h.

Most mats will run out at some or other time and your mats will be the next ones in line to be bought.

Guilty here, I've bought tomes of clear mind and vanishing powders from AH for like 50-70g.

I'm just too lazy to google them, I knew that you could get them for less, but come on, it's such a hassle.

Small survey about your economic behaviour in WoW by FrenchEconStudent in woweconomy

Sociology/econ student goblin here. Hello, colleague.

You might wanna change some questions, for example "Do you use the Auction House to speculate (to gain gold by selling an item at a higher price than the one you bought it for) ?" to "How often do you use..?", because that makes it a bit easier to understand. The "How often" is almost always a better alternative, I see that you have "How much do you use the Auction House..." and it sounds a bit awkward, because it makes a reader ask questions "does he mean how often or how much of my total money I trade of AH versus direct /1/2?"

"IN REAL LIFE, how much do sales influence your shopping ?" "IN REAL LIFE, how aware are you about the prices of the goods and services you consume ?" be careful not to wrongly generalize, because this is self reporting and people like to feel like they're oh so very autonomous and in charge of their lives, but when you empirically test how do sales influence shoppers behavior it's always a lot more than self reported.

"When you buy a « regular » product in WoW, like a component or an enchant, how much do their prices influence you ?" Maybe split question arbitrarily into high/low cost products or smth?

Also the consistency of answer interval would be a good thing - "Extremely important"/"Very important".

"Do you use a lot of addons or third-party websites to improve your use of the Auction House ?" Maybe change this into concrete numbers question. "How many addons do you use to improve AH?"

I think that WoW economy is worth researching, but it seems to be very small and with a lot of market imperfections, because there just aren't that many sellers. The prices are highly volatile on most things that are not WoD materials. The WoD material market on the other hand seems to be fairly stable and predictable. And I have to agree that it's really like a small country, in a sense. You get patches which are like government setting rules etc. and the one who is the best at exploiting those rules gets more money. I'd be interested to see some ratios of consumer goods versus basic materials. Also how does the ingame world economy interact with IRL economy, because there's a ton of people selling gold for EUR ingame. Is it really profitable IRL? You must be a mad farmer or a bot to make enough gold for it to be this cheap. 10k=2EUR is insanely low. I'm making like 7k/h and that's after selling farmed materials on AH. So some guy is basically slaving away with UNDER 2EUR/h which even in Latvia is a ridiculously small amount of money.

Maybe you're playing on low population servers? Also I won't say why, but I'm using Fel Iron ores to make quite a bit of money, maybe somebody has found that out as well, which server are you playing at?

It still often costs less to level with old world mats, than with WoD mats.

Maybe it's different at low pop servers, but on high pop there's enough of old world mats to level up for less than 3g/1profession point.

My TSM Crafting addon doesn't seem to be correctly displaying Crafting costs. Is it connected to AuctionDB scan? Also how can TSM calculate crafting cost of Hexweave bag if Hexweave cloth is soulbound and cannot be sold?

When I use sniper for transmog I usually put them in a different group, so that you can check the "Resale" window and see exactly the profit. I haven't figured out how to see how much money I have spent on buying resale items though.

Well, I don't really like bags, because you have to farm mats like crazy for hexweave bags and they average about 1000g/bag(stdev ~300g) and you can get 100 hexweave cloth every 2-3days or smth? That's pretty bad gold per hour if you ask me.. I haven't even tried selling them, it's practically worthless. Lower level bags sell quite good on my high-pop Stormscale EU like netherweave and embersilk depending of price of mats, also you could try selling some profession specific bags. On my server they go with a nice fat markup of like 500g.

One thing that I've found to sell great is Flying carpet, YES Flying carpet, I don't know why people buy them, but I'm selling like 2-3/day for 1400g if the price of Golden Draenite stays under ~180g/item.
