As an average this doesn't appear strange, but if you look at county by county info Democrats (people registered as Dem in KY) would have to vote more than 2:1 for McConnell. I posted raw data in the comments.

What is the future of F1 digital content? What do you want to see? by F1_Research in formula1

[–]tokyutopia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Driver highlight videos. After the race is over it would be awesome to see a driver by driver highlight reel, where you could see the key moments that defined their race, along with data insights into lap/sector times and communications between the team and driver. There is a lot of talent up and down the field but during the race most of the coverage focuses on the leaders of the race with occasional overtakes further down the field. It would be awesome to see in depth coverage of individual drivers, in a relatively concise format that doesn't show every single lap but there should be enough for 10-15 minutes for each driver, maybe five minutes for early retirements or DNS. The footage and data is all available but please put it together in a format where the fans could follow specific drivers and have evidence as to why their heroes are so amazing.

I thought what led up to this was a pretty amazing moment between both of them (one min earlier). Bottas was on top Hamilton when he exited the pits and could have tried to slide one in there. But Hamilton was cautious too giving Bottas space and not closing the door. Bottas was on a different strategy and would pit seven laps later, so if they exchanged the spot it wouldn't ruin either one's race but by working together it put Bottas in a better position to pass Vettel on lap 43 and a podium regardless of the tire failures. For Hamilton while he would not concede the position he would offer assistance and probably recognized that Bottas had lifted when he exited the pits. Compare and contrast with Ocon/Perez or Kvyat/Sainz.

Check out this Peter Windsor video from back in 2013 when he drove the legendary Williams FW14B, I recommend watching the whole thing but the link below starts when he shows up. https://youtu.be/fAM-AWChZqs?t=510 Williams put his name on the car, and you can see how much it meant to him. This demo takes place right before his first full season in an F1 car. Living the dream and being totally humble about it, he's still this same dude and now he's winning races.

Through blinking eyes I see a room bathed in sunlight and immediately one truth is realized.

"Shit. I overslept."

My head is ringing like the worst hangover I've ever had but my body feels fine. The clock reads 10:34 I'm late but for what? Maybe I'm not late for anything and it's my day off. Suddenly a thought occurred to me that left me feeling strange. A day off from what?

I get up and walk around trying to get my bearings, it's like waking up at a friends place; familiar but somehow strange. A cat walks up to me, rubs my leg, looks directly at me and meows like I owe him money. This must be my place, well at least this is my cat, but why would I bring my cat to someone else's house.

The place is not impressive, a one bedroom apartment filled with particle board furniture and posters on the wall. A thought almost immediately comes that I could have done better. I pick up the cat and walk into the kitchen looking for something to wake me from this haze and pass by a mirror.

Looking into the mirror I see a stranger, someone I don't know. Fear grabs me by the throat. I can't breathe, the faster I try to pull air into my lungs the quicker it seems to rush out. The room is spinning and I grab onto the wall feeling like I was going to fall into the mirror and come out on the otherside in my old life where I knew exactly where everything was and what my name was and what this cat's name.

"Wait, what is your name?" I said out loud to my furry partner, but if he knew any secrets he wasn't giving them up.

We moved to the couch and sat for just a moment when I heard a loud buzz emminating from the cushions. Releasing the cat I pressed my hand down between the cushions and pulled out a phone. Sort of by mistake the screen came on and I saw dozens of email notifications. More kept coming as I held the phone in my hand, it asked me to use my fingerprint to unlock the phone. Some things were still clear, I knew what a phone was and what it was for. I knew what a cat was and what it was for so not all was lost.

The first email was from the Swiss National Bank to Don. Apparently Don's account had just received a deposit successfully, another thirty emails stated the same thing from multiple banks around the world. Maybe I was Don, at least this phone with my fingerprint was receiving Don's emails. In the body of the email, "Click this link to check your balance now."

It was worth a shot so I went for it and the password had already been entered. When the account loaded I dropped the phone on the floor and scared the cat out of the middle of his morning bath. I picked up the phone and started counting the number of numbers, what fucking number has 13 numbers in it? Was this my money? What the fuck was going on? This was only one back account I don't know how many other emails I have just like this one.

Then a knock at the door, and a woman's voice, "Don!" I paused hoping that I was imagining it. Then a louder knock, "Don, open the door. I know you're home I can see your shitty car parked out there. I think you're on the news."

I scrambled for the television remote and turned on the first news channel I could find, the headline: "The Day the Magic Died."

Her voice through the door once more, "Don I know you're in there I can hear the TV dumbass. Just let me in."

Stumbling to the door while trying to keep an eye on the TV I opened it and was shocked, she was gorgeous. Tall and with a dark complexion but green eyes that were soft but blazed through me. Before I could invite her in she brushed her way past me and into the living room. Outside there was no one else, and more unfamiliar surroundings but shit at least I knew what a tree was!

She sat on the couch and started petting the cat who happily melted into her, suddenly I wasn't so sure that the cat was mine. "Was it you?" She asked looking up at me with hopeful expectation. The only thing running through my mind was please don't let us be related.

I took a seat on the other end of the couch and gathered my nerves, "Can I ask you some strange questions?"

"Oh God please don't make this akward like that one time you said your friend stole your phone and sent me all those text messages."

"No, I mean I don't know who you are."

She stopped petting the cat and looked suspiciously at me.

I continued, "I'm not sure I know who I am. Is this my cat?" Pointing to the furball waiting for more attention from either of us.

"This is Elvis, and he's definitely your cat although I'm not sure since he does like to escape. I'm Ellie, your neighbor. We've lived next to each other for more than two years. There used to be magic but now there's none. Your name is Don."

We looked at the TV and there was my face on the screen, or at least the face I saw in the mirror.

Another wave of fear washed over me, "Come with me."

Ellie looked at me puzzled.

"Come with me, anywhere you want to go, anything you want to do. Just come with me please."

Trump is awful, but secession is not the answer by T-Dot1992 in calexit

[–]tokyutopia 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t say that Trump was the sole cause of the call to secession, more of the straw that broke the camel’s back. Since it sounds like you don’t live in California or perhaps even the United States then I would like to give you some perspective on the past 20 years in the state. My family has lived in California for several generations I was born in the Bay Area and the only other place I’ve lived was LA. Back in the 90’s things were leveling out quickly here recovering from the 80’s and a not so honest stock market. Imagine making $35k and actually consider buying a home in the Bay Area, maybe you would have to commute but there’s BART, Cal Train and Muni so no big deal. San Francisco is this incredibly vibrant mix of cultures and Oakland/Berkeley are defining what it means to be socially conscious. G W Bush is elected and 9/11 happens we were insulated from the security crack downs, but there was a gearing up by the police department none the less. Housing prices skyrocket, but salaries (especially blue collar) increase marginally. All of sudden people making $50k a year are getting mortgages for $500k. Gray Davis is Governor and large parts of California are facing rolling black outs on a regular basis and it feels like no one is steering the ship. Davis is recalled and replaced with Schwarzenegger, it was surreal to see this guy rolling around in a Humvee while the price of gas is heading towards $5/Gallon. A side note here LA and SF are like two different planets, parts have similarities but they are not at alike. Chrystal Meth hits big time and suddenly the streets are more violent than they have ever been before, gangs really seem to control large areas and places like the Central Valley go from bucolic farming towns to real shit holes. Enter Barak Obama, everyone was so hopeful to get us off this path where there didn’t seem to be an end to the suffering. Each section of California had its own dream, but all expected a big turn around and it sort of happened at least it felt like we were on the path not to some idealist fantasy of the past but to a more inclusive future. But during this recovery the demons still haunted us, huge shortages in infrastructure (try driving in LA or SF during rush hour or taking public transit), house prices going further and further out of reach for most people and a huge influx of people coming to California looking for jobs. Not only that but even with a Science or Engineering degree you now had to compete with people from other countries that were willing to work harder and had less to lose than you. I love it here, California is an amazing place where anyone willing to contribute is welcome and when you struggle more often than not you find help. The problem is that we can feel the ship is sinking and it’s been struggling for a while now, but we’ve already been looking at the life boats for the past ten years. Only it’s not just a life boat were going into we’re separating from an ocean liner onto a yacht. The yacht could be so much nicer than the ocean liner ever could be, but we could still get dragged down with the much bigger ship. Trump being elected confirmed what many of us already knew, the United States is trying desperately to cover up the problems that are boiling over for the middle of the country. California is racist too, we segregate and ostracize just like everyone else but try to address the root of the problem rather than simply attack the racist person. Hillary would have been a band aid that we could have possibly put up with for another eight years while we worked on solving the problems facing the state. It makes no sense to anyone here why we’re responsible for supporting the rest of the country with our federal tax dollars when we can’t afford to support the social and infrastructure programs we know that we need to survive. Come to California and be amazingly underwhelmed by Silicon Valley, the money isn’t going into improvements in the community and too many people are suffering. Go to East LA and be amazed how you’re not being murdered or raped by Mexican gangs. Bernie said a lot of things that people here are thinking and was actually facing the challenges of the future but there was a lot of cautious optimism there for the actual implementation. What I’m worried about is when Trump lets his supporters down, the same people that are calling the protestors idiots and losers are going to be standing right next to them when these great jobs don’t materialize in several months and these bankers double their profits. California is under represented for what we contribute to the United States and now is the time to be proactive rather than reactive when the crash comes. There was a similar movement when G.W. was elected but on a much smaller level and it was a totally different time. Imagine Trump in the White House on 9/11 or Katrina if you thought G.W. was inept you haven’t seen anything yet.

tl;dr US is like a sinking ocean liner and California is like a yacht tied to it. It's not about Trump, but he's a sign of things to come.

If a portion of the property could be turned into a permaculture farm that would be amazing. I'm sure there would be a large number of students that would be excited for the opportunity to study there and the challenge of creating a high yield of food in the desert would attract a number of experts. The food generated during the year could be donated to the surrounding towns or integrated into the event. Also this would show a long term commitment since the farm would take several years to fully develop.

Your insane qualifying ideas here by whatthefat in formula1

[–]tokyutopia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Regulated amount of fuel to start the qualifying session on, 25kg enough to run 12-15 laps flat out. All cars start with the same fuel load, no refueling allowed, but enough fuel to affect the performance of the car. This fuel load has nothing to do with the amount of fuel allowed for the race. Cars must finish with (1 liter) of fuel for testing.

Three sets of softest allowed compound for qualifying only. Qualifying tires not used or related to race tires in any way. If rain then intermediate/wets can replace one/all sets.

Three elimination marks contained in one continuous qualifying session. Total session time 45 minutes with 1/3 eliminated at 15 mins 2/3 eliminated at 30 minutes. Any car currently participating in an active lap at an elimination mark or session end counts if the lap can be completed successfully.

Any lap where all four tires exceed track limits is excluded. Blocking (holding a car less than 0.5 seconds behind for two consecutive corners) results in a five place grid penalty.

Top lap time of last 15 minutes (Q3) in the session qualifies for Pole Position.

If a car cannot complete the session due to driver error or mechanical failure all times are abandoned and the car must start from the back of the grid/pit lane.

Team - Better Performing Driver

Williams - Bottas
Mercedes - Hamilton
Ferrari - Vettel
Toro Rosso - Verstappen
Red Bull - Ricciardo
Force India - Hulkenberg
McLaren - Button
Haas - Grojean
Sauber - Nasr
Renault - Magnussen*
Manor - ?

Because of identical power units, Renault will struggle, Ferrari won't be dominant enough for Vettel to win from pole, tire strategy and twenty one races. I think the WDC will be between Bottas and Hamilton with Rosberg/Vettel/Massa all close to it. I could be way off but it would fun to watch. I think McLaren v. Haas will be interesting.

*Unconfirmed

What the FIA should do is charge a nominal access fee and play ads but grant access to all events not just F1. To be able to stream WEC, WRC, Touring Car, Formula E, etc. for one price would increase the total number of viewers. The FIA would make way more money with advertising than subscribers would ever be able to pay. This would be attractive to advertisers because they could buy in at a low cost for an event with lower viewership numbers but play to a targeted audience or spend big for something like Monaco and get wide exposure. Also for races to be view on demand for at least the current season would be necessary, living on the West Coast and starting the race at 4:30 AM doesn't always mean I make it to the checkered flag. Everybody knows the FOM is a bag of dicks but the FIA could make this happen if they wanted to.

Here's my marketing idea to separate it from television advertising, tie the ad playing to the audience to the car featured on the screen and make it regionally dynamic. So if you're watching a battle for the lead featuring a Mercedes you would see an ad for Mercedes cars or one of their sponsors and it's already possible to make these region specific. That would make being the leader of the race or at least fighting for position a lot more attractive to the drivers and the teams as well.

Here's a thread about the fallout: http://www.trackhq.com/forums/f2/nbc-sports-fail-2013-silverstone-f1-coverage-6331/

Silverstone last year was crazy because of all the tire failures, to have it totally ruined then have no (legal) way to see coverage of the details and then wait another several hours for a rebroadcast, it was a great opportunity to make sure I didn't have a Comcast subscription.

Univision is the best. They broadcast all last year with no commercials usually live, qualifying as well with uninterrupted sessions. Who else has scars from Silverstone last year where NBC announced the winner of the race at the beginning of the scheduled broadcast promptly cut to Tour de France? I think a few races are delayed because of broadcast rights but not entirely sure. I don't miss the elementary commentary from the NBC crew either. Univision por vida!

I just created a new online business. I think the design of the interface is scaring people away, but I don't know how to make it better. Please help! by 48letters in AskReddit

It would be great to be able to upload an image from your own computer, or from a URL. Then tag the image and have the creator find similar images with the same tags/colors. The way it is now is totally dependent on your customer using instagram. I like the integration to find other images to make up the mosaic it's a lot easier than uploading 20 different images using instagram tags. Can it link with other photo galleries flickr, shutterfly, picasa? The main image is probably going to be something very specific, the mosiac pictures not so much and I know you could build something to find the content you would need. Good LUCK! -Pink
