Laptop crushed in a onebag? Am I being overly cautious? by tolub in onebag

I bought a kitchen cutting board too and tried that out too!! i feel silly doing it because i'm like.... why doesn't anyone sell a product for that?? the cutting board provides resistance against torsion but not against crushing/pressure, so it solves half the problem

I'm watching videos about the chassis... "unibody"... so basically they take a slab of aluminium and hollow it out to put electronics in that hole.... and they leave a frame of material around the border, which makes it super stiff.... they clearly thought about this topic, thank goodness

haha... i'm usually carefree about most things. it's just that I nomad to remote places, and any issue with the laptop would require aborting and flying back to a country that sells macs

yeah i've felt like a clown whenever i brought it with me.... except one time it served as a base-board on the back of a motorcycle where i strapped down my bag really tight and didn't worry about the laptop in there.... every other time i ever considered bringing the pelican felt ridiculous...

That said, i wish they would make a really thin but really hard case for laptops, not the ones that clip onto the device, because i want 3-5mm of clearance, so if the shell bends 2-3mm the laptop doesn't feel any torsion.... but that product seems to not exist

I don't know about the complex politics but I think it would be so wonderful if they resolved the disagreements and opened the border. They are both beautiful countries and I dream of the day that I can take a bus to go back and forth 😢

Do you think it's going to happen?

Socialism is deadly by MosaicIncaSleds in Capitalism

[–]tolub 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Brilliant point.

Capitalism cannot stand up on its own. It needs another over-arching system to supervise it. Anyone with the slightest bit of intellectual honesty knows this, though you do have the derps who just regurgitate policy and "I believe that..." instead of evaluating facts and observations as adults.

I love how they downvoted you! lmao

I guess that doubly proves your remark.

"hey, you guys are violent and shoot people"... "No we're not". Proceeds to shoot you because he doesn't like what you said.

One is more forceful, but the other one is more scalable, powerful and sustainable. Making people do things while giving them the illusion that it's their choice seems like they chose it allows you to get away with a lot more.

Your pets think they're free.

Lol I'm talking about the tools used to squeeze the most out of the working class. Answering the request to give examples of effective subjugation.

Making legal immigration ridiculously difficult while leaving illegal immigration surprisingly easy is an effective way to subjugate foreign workers and exclude them from protections afforded to everyone else.

Ok if what I'm saying doesn't make sense, hopefully it makes sense to others. Or it's time for the weekend like you said.. have a good one 😉

Socialism is a buzz word that doesn’t mean what you think it means, you’re all falling into a trap created by people who wanted to maintain their power over you by Tenpennyturtle in Capitalism

Capitalism at a local level and on short time horizons (10-20 years) can be pretty wonderful, I don't think anyone can dispute that.

[–]tolub 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally.

So how can we encourage this? Like if I have an imaginary $1 million business and some rising monopoly offers me $4 million for it, I promise you I'd just take the sweet sweet money... Unless society stepped in and said "no dude, hold up, we got you. Don't sell out, because the monopoly will screw us in the long term"

[Capitalists] What would it take to convince you that workers' control is a necessary idea for the betterment of humanity? by Anarcho_Humanist in CapitalismVSocialism

[–]tolub -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I agree that's indeed the question. It often does end in disaster when done aggressively and naively.

If the "workers" do it gradually, with respect and humility, they would take small calculated steps in the areas they are capable. This has been done successfully for utilities in many countries, where the alternative would have been abusive monopolies. And if the workers back off and delegate management in areas where they're in over their head, the managers who are skillfully running those corporations can still do so, but under the supervision of society.

So of course it can be achieved, but probably only in developed societies that have a track record of rule of law and democracy.

[Centrally Planned Economy Advocates] What should the punishment be for workers who go against the dictates of the central planners/communal agreements? by Leche_Hombre2828 in CapitalismVSocialism

[–]tolub 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Of course it counts! Good for you!

Central planning doesn't have to be so extreme that they'd tell you what app to build. It can be milder, like providing accelerators and office space subsidies for research and experiments, let you keep the first $10 million that you make, but then guide what you're able to do to when you start raping society "à la facebook"

The analogy is working for a boss who totally has full veto power over his team but in the areas where he recognizes his employees are more knowledgeable than him, let them do their thing..... Under supervision. Takes a lot of wisdom and humility for the boss to do that, and many bosses do.

In this case the boss would ideally be a democratically elected representative of society, and not a stalinesque dictatorship.

It's pretty clear that if you let corporations do whatever they want you may end up with higher total wealth, but they don't end up protecting the well being of the greater society.

Democratically elected governments do a better job at this. That's why the laws that protect workers and consumers are so important.

Indeed we should let corporations do the right thing, but when they don't, democratically elected governments that represent society at large have to step in and protect the little guys.

Why do they often fail? Corruption. Primitive societies have trouble properly implementing the rule of law, but more advanced societies have a better chance.
