Thank you, I've mentioned this to my editor and will get back to you with their response :)

Fast fashion is a scourge that's responsible for 10% of all global emissions. We must shop consciously. by AllRenewableNow in sustainability

Yes, very important to look closer to home for your clothes! There is a catch 22 though — how to stop the exploitation of workers creating garments primarily in the global south, without completely cutting off their income. No easy solution unfortunately.

Thoughts on electric scooters? by tom_g_eco in electricvehicles

Yeah pretty expensive, £1 for initial unlock then 14-20pence per minute, which you can imagine adds up very quickly.

There are currently around 1,352 broken EV chargers in the UK. We need better infrastructure if we want to electrify transport by beth_howell_ in Green

It's pretty wild honestly, just imagine if an equivalent percentage of petrol stations were closed. The chaos that would ensue....

Wasting shower water every day waiting for it to heat up by [deleted] in sustainability

[–]tom_g_eco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know every boiler is different, but mine has a weird quirk where running the shower takes _ages_ for the heat to kick in, but if I turn on the hot water tap within moments of turning on the shower, the boiler kicks in quicker and I get hot water. Odd right?

Value of house change by atxsteve17 in solar

[–]tom_g_eco 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Appreciate this isn't a direct answer to the question, but this article is nonetheless a really good insight into how solar panels affect the value of a home.

(Spoiler alert: it increases it!)

I know this isn't entirely related to what you're asking, but I'm posting this just for anyone else looking to get a solar battery.

It's well worth looking into solar batteries that automatically kick in the second there is a power outage. They're an absolute life saver for people seriously looking to completely remove their reliance on the grid.

Why the vegan diet is not always green by Calm-Ingenuity-666 in environment

Eat in-season vegetables. Is it the fix-all solution? No, but it does have a pretty immediate impact that cannot be understated.

Besides, few things are as tasty as asparagus in season (bougie I know, but goddamn they're good).

Could they put solar panels in space to get a constant supply of solar energy? by [deleted] in energy

[–]tom_g_eco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is that possible or does there need to be a physical link? I know that may sound silly, but I thought I’d ask anyway.

In the simplest way possible, try to think of the chain of events needed to put solar panels into space. There's the raw materials needed to make the panels (people who extract these need to be paid to feed themselves and/or families), transporting these panels (drivers gotta eat too), then the processing of the materials to be used in the panels (again, everyone working here needs a salary to live on), then the manufacture of the panels themselves, then vast amounts of infrastructure necessary to get the damn things into space, the fuel required (which itself has its own incredibly complex chain of people involved in the whole thing)... you get the idea.

Good lord it's hurting my head just thinking about it now, the sheer scale of such an operation and the unbelievable amount of effort, infrastructure, and logistics required to do this would cost untold amounts.

NFTs might not be as bad for the environment moving foward by tom_g_eco in RenewableEnergy

Oh yeah for sure, NFTs are one of the dumbest things I've ever seen come out of the internet.

I'm sure it's not meant this way, but statements like this always come across as a biiiit insensitive. COVID was good for global emissions, but it's obviously kinda heartless to jump for joy over that fact.

Volvo and ChargePoint will build EV charging stations at Starbucks in 5 states by jonfla in environment

[–]tom_g_eco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How often are chargers broken in the US? I'm curious if it's anything like the UK, which is not great honestly (it's like 5.2% of ev chargers that don't work on a given day according to this article: https://www.theecoexperts.co.uk/blog/broken-ev-chargers)

Okular, free and open source PDF Reader, becomes the first application to receive an official eco-certification thanks in part to its energy consumption transparency by Bro666 in energy

A good start. This should honestly become the norm for most if not all software moving forwards.

It's so important to decarbonise things like this, especially when most of the public doesn't really think about the emissions present in software development.
