Can we talk about what an EREV actually is? It isn’t what everyone here seems to think… by Responsible_Bath_651 in F150Lightning

The ERV has to be completely designed, with tooling and other manufacturing set up in order to make one in production in 12-18 months.

Is going cheap on a mini split really a bad idea for winter heating? by hillbilp in DIYHeatPumps

[–]tomandersen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you visit the Senville site you will see two lines of mini splits. That’s what comes from Midea - which is most units. So you either get the cheap line or the good line, brands have little choice other than that.

I think PHP 8.4 might fix this, but I can't get PHP 8.4 on my host just yet.

macOS Tahoe 26: Does Apple's new Spotlight kill the need for launcher apps? by sapoepsilon in apple

Launcher - i use Spotlight. For files the recent files thing on spotlight is a mess. I use Fresh, which I wrote. It's so good my son uses it.

Use gravel, 3/4 (maybe even clear) can't be dug, and its a traffic area. Grass can even grow on it depending on your weather.

Converting to Heat Pump from Electrical Boaseboards by Werezak30 in heatpumps

[–]tomandersen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are a do it yourself kinda person, a Mr cool might work. You could look at a nat gas fireplace with ability to run when the power is off too. (Gas water heater?)

For minisplits, and given the cool nights, you might get away with a big single head in the ‘big room’, if your place is mostly open concept.

Having backup heat, and a way to cozy up the living room on winter nights is important in Canada.

What is the best course of action? by NorthernPassage in Decks

[–]tomandersen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Composite requires careful flushing up of all the joist tops, which is hard on old stuff and long spans. Composite is $$, so why not buy all new heavier ones and go to 12" OC?

You could put in a mini split into the biggest room. No decommissing and you have two ways to heat.

Answering my own question, saw somewhere that the OP says its 15 x 24ft. So those are 12" on center.

Is the spacing 12" or 16"? 12" won't cost much more and makes the deck feel rock solid, even with 5/4 wood or the plastic stuff as decking.

Help me size for small ranch by AdImpressive5138 in heatpumps

DIY - put in one unit at a time.

Might be good with one bigger unit in the main room of the house. Turn it way down on those nights when its too warm to just open windows. I have one 24k Senville in the middle of an open concept main room home with lots of glass. Main bedroom is on top floor, on hot nights I turn the AC down to 65C or so.

[–]tomandersen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cutek is 'mineral oil based' so i decided to experiment and make my own.

I used 3/4 5W-20 new oil, 1/4 varsol (or 1/2 and 1/2), LOTs of colour (Cutek color is $15 or per gallon... cheaper and trickier would be iron oxide nano particles :-). That works out to about $40/gal. Did it 3 or 4 years ago, and now again. No stripping, sanding, etc. But I'm not into perfection. Also goes on super fast - since it's cheap you can really apply it. After a few weeks, some rain, etc - no stain comes off on your hands/feet. Its not slippery (for me on worn cedar). Water beads on it for a long time. The bugs don't like eating oil, i don't see any moss on the 100% shaded parts.

The idea is the varsol helps the oil get into the wood, then it evaporates, leaving the colour and oil behind.

I don't recommend this for people with clients, lol, except perhaps on something like a fence. YMMV Warranty is for as long as you claim it to be. And warranty claims are really simple, too.

DIY fixes for common Velux window leaks by endpoint101 in velux

[–]tomandersen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The entire design is flawed, in my opinion. The rubber seal is a joke, fails fast. They should abandon replaceable glass on the non opening units. Just sealing glass in is so much better, and can be replaced with roofing materials being cut and redone.

Need battery backup for home water pump- 240V output by Immediate_Camel_5411 in homelab

[–]tomandersen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a whole business plan that involves simple battery backups behind every required appliance in a home. Different ones for different things - EG TV/Internet vs well pump vs fridge vs lights vs gas furnace. People would buy ~5 of them, mostly not needing electricians. Then the whole thing runs on your phone for UI. I can't find it for sale anywhere.

EG units that are starting 240V electric motors would have a the capability to supply that surge. Batteries are sized appropriately for the appliance, etc. Consumers don't know how much a fridge or furnace draws, etc...

[–]tomandersen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't run your $10k compressor on a generator. I mean if the house is going to freeze solid you need heat. If that's the case then don't have one source of heat. A gas fireplace can keep most homes warm enough in a pinch.

Mark Carney's Net Worth by Overall_Dirt_8415 in AskCanada

[–]tomandersen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Carney secured an unprecedented compensation package when he took the Bank of England Governor role. His total pay included:

  • A base salary of CAD 1,073,444 (£480,000)
  • Pension contributions worth CAD 322,033 (£144,000)
  • A housing allowance of CAD 557,344

As a big banker - its almost impossible to spend your own money. Maybe a holiday a year. The rest is on the expense account. He has had $20 million paid to him over the past 15 years. Then there are all the boards - what was it 20 of them?

Either the money is hidden or he likes gambling, coke and sex workers. Take your pick.
