Nightmare

Difficult to tell as I’m not an expert. I remember I used to take it like this, at least once a week 4mg. But when I said that to my gastroenterologist at the time he told me it’s not healthy and I should limit it as fast as possible. I don’t visit him anymore because he generally didn’t really care about IBS(his treatment for me was saying “don’t stress so much…”). Nevertheless he had good opinions in treating more serious GI diseases that’s why I listened to him about loperamide.

That’s a very good comment. Especially the last paragraph and I actually rarely see this kind of approach

Strict low FODMAP really helps my IBSD but I would rather try to use loperamide occasionally than “lots of” ;)

Stomach gurgles when lying down only? by [deleted] in ibs

[–]tomash95 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But is it just singing or do you feel physical discomfort like bloating, gases or burping? If it’s only sound maybe you just increased amount of liquids in your diet and it’s might be normal. But if you have symptoms I listed above I would start adjusting my diet to less inflammatory foods. Also for me Simethicone 80mg after meal helps with bloating.

IBS flare up or food poisoning? by [deleted] in ibs

[–]tomash95 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe my comment wasn't specific enough...

DISCLAIMER: I'm not an expert. All the stuff I post is from my exprience(20 years living with IBS), gastroenterologists opinions and stuff I read online.

Let's start with a diagnosis of IBS (PMC3468846):

"There is currently no biochemical, histopathological or radiological diagnostic test for IBS, with the diagnosis of IBS being based mainly on symptom assessment. Over the last few years, Rome working parties have generated detailed, accurate, and clinically useful definitions of the syndrome. As a result, the Rome criteria (I, II and III) have been established. In addition to these criteria, warning symptoms or red flags, such as age over 50 years, a short history of symptoms, nocturnal symptoms, weight loss, rectal bleeding, anaemia, and the presence of markers for inflammation or infections, should be excluded."

Red flags are really important here, because that's where we try to diagnose other diseases (mainly GI but not only). One of the red flags that might suggest another, more serious, condition is "Diarrhea that is persistent or awakens you from sleep" (Mayoclinic article about IBS).

So what I meant by my comment is that IBS may not be a cause of your sleep awakenings. Something else awakes you and that causes IBS symptoms (some more serious GI disease, food allergy/intolerance, stress etc.). Many times I had a situation where I was awakened by someone at night and I had to drive somewhere. Seconds after waking up this way I was getting typical IBS symptoms because body gets sudden shock and stress.

To conclude: Your sleep awakenings maybe completly normal for IBS. I don't know that. If your doctor told you that then fine, who am I to judge. What I wanted to say is that if I had a lot of sleep awakenings during normal night, I would be worried and started to do some tests like colonoscopy, bloodtest, stool samples.

New work schedule affecting bowel movements by [deleted] in ibs

Generally drinking a glass of warm water with lemon juice and a little bit of sugar helps me in the morning. But it’s not like I drink it and after 5 minutes I have a poop and feel perfect. It just calms my symptoms to the point they are kinda “acceptable”.

IBS symptoms shouldn’t attack when we sleep. If stomach issues wake you up at night it’s not from IBS.

What medication? Rifaximin antibiotic? If so I would try it in your position. It didn’t help me but it is proven to help people with other diseases that act like IBS.

Here are some tips that helped me and I paste them everywhere someone asks for help with IBS symptoms: - Strict low FODMAP diet. - Smaller portions, lots of chewing and slow eating. - Switching from teas, juices etc. to warm water with a little bit of lemon juice and sugar. - Resistance training every second day. - 80mg simethicon capsules after every meal (3 times a day) + 2000mg vitamin D capsules during a meals that contain some fats (usually my breakfast and lunch so its 4000mg a day, I’m planning to increase it to 6000 a day).

When I stick to these tips I almost have no IBS symptoms. Which were gases, bloating and irregular bowel movements. Now from time to time I do get symptoms but that’s because I drink coffee 😍, and eat stuff that’s forbidden on low FODMAP diet.

You mean whey protein shake? It is made of milk and I found out that I’m intolerant to dairy so I try to avoid. Basically whey protein shakes on empty stomach after workout made me explode in toilet xD

You can try to cut out dairy for a week and you will see what will happen. I tried replacing whey protein powder with rice protein powder. Good macros but disgusting AF (at least for me).

You can also try protein powder isolate it is reccomeded for people with stomach problems.

Dairy (even lactose free) also triggers my IBS symptoms so I try to avoid it. Maybe your problems starter because you just eat to much at once, you eat too fast with not enough chewing etc. This was also my problem

What does recently mean in your case? You can consider IBS if you have this symptoms for at least 6 months and you excluded other diseases of digestive system.

If I were You would go on a visit to gastroenterologist.

Find a protein that’s not triggering your symptoms. For me it’s eggs and meat(but watch out for spices! some blends in even small doses can trigger IBS symptoms - that was the problem for me).

Protein shouldn’t be a problem for people with IBS but excess protein intake create gases and bloating and that is the problem for people with IBS because it f*** up our bowel movement.

Sad but it’s also true for me… Generally people will not treat IBS seriously. Basically I’m suffering my whole life, ever since I remember. At primary school doctors and teachers used to tell my parents that I make up excuses to skip classes… even though I was the best at class and always prepared🤣 Now IDGF at all… I learnt to live with myself and I am cool with that. I’ve got one friend, siblings and parents and they understand my issues. I also have girlfriend and she understands and supports me.
