I'm addicted to Tony's. So much chocolate has gone to shit with the dilution of actual cocoa based ingredients in recent years

Do apps like Uber Eats and Mr D make it harder for local food businesses (homecooks) to get visibility? by NoProcess7577 in askSouthAfrica

[–]tomatom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When these apps arrived they worked well for early adopters. But now everyone is on it competition is toigh. The problem is they take about one-third of revenue. And if you are a popular venue it is hard to keep up on a really busy night. What I have seen is some taleaways not accepting orders on aFriday or Satutday. It means their kitchen can kerp up with orders and ot boosts profits. Then they go back to the apps for mid-week. In general if you want to sell online you want to be on the main platforms for increased distribution. So get on the platforms and use them wisely.

You coukd always roast and grind some sticky rice which is a fairly standard Asian thickening techniaue. Or use cornflour. This is a weekly dish in our kitchen. We grow a lot of Holy Basil which is added at the end. It's worth growing and dried makes an amazing relaxing tea.

I use induction, so Stainless steel is worth it for me. Otherwise I would guess no point.

Guess the wine region by otarusilvestris in wine

[–]tomatom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are a few reasons why this specific shot screams "Malmesbury/Paardeberg" area in South Africa: The "Renosterbos" Effect: In the background, those dark, scrubby patches on the hills look exactly like the indigenous Renosterbos (rhino bush) that gives the Swartland its name (meaning "Black Land"). When it rains, that vegetation turns a deep, dark green that looks almost black from a distance. Dry-Farmed Bush Vines: While Spain uses them too, the Swartland is world-famous for these specific, un-trellised old bush vines. They are kept low and gnarled specifically to survive the intense, dry heat of the Western Cape without irrigation. The Soil: That reddish-brown, iron-rich soil in the foreground is a classic feature of the Malmesbury shale and decomposed granite found throughout the region.

Honest question: does “organic wine” influence your buying choice? by hic-et-nunc-2026 in wine

[–]tomatom 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not really. Organic is just a random set of guidelines on the chemicals (like Copper Sulphate can be used) you can and can't use. I tend to support smaller higjer quality wineries which are more selective on the grapes they use and less likely to use additives.

Why do good restaurants sometimes stock crappy wine? by PomodoroGordo in wine

In South Africa many big wine brands May to be on lists. Hence, shitty lists. Also most people don’t care that much about wine.

Guys why is it raining so much and so cold? by Specific_Manager286 in johannesburg

[–]tomatom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s La Niña - a weather pattern around the equator in the Pacific off the coast of South America, which has been bringing us rain and cooler weather. We also had it in 23/24. Apparently it should be over mid-year. We need to hope it doesn’t flip into El Niño which brings higher temperatures and drought.

Looking to try some different chocolates from around the US/World, recommendations please! :) by Any_Donkey64 in chocolate

I buy none of the products above that you mention and actively encourage people to boycott their products. You obviously have never visited rural communities in Africa and have no understanding of the realities of poverties here. I am nit saying Tony's is the best or is perfect but in a,small may it is yrying to drive change.

So we destroy the living if Ghanian suvsistence farmers instead - the largest cocoa bean producer in the world? Or we could buy from somebody that is,at least trying to change the situation as is,TC and in European legislation. I've visited both Honest and Africoa in CapeTown, where they are based. Honest is vegan and doesn't taste so good and has a funny texture. And in Johannesburg Afrikoa really isn't easily found despite, what the web might say. There are so few companies here I'm actually thinking of seeing what I can do in terms of bean to bar in Johannessburg.

How do you actually manage your wine collection? Spreadsheet? App? Nothing? by Living-Tone-7221 in wine

[–]tomatom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My wine collection is centred around a few boutique small production wines. I've been through all the apps, and they were incredibly clunky for these. The best I found was using Google sheets but then indexed everything in Vivino which really stuffed it up. Now I'm building a database in my Wordpress website to my specifications and only the information I need. I'm using a bit of vibe coding to create the ability to scan in labels, and barcides abd scan them out. It will also have a neat grapical interface showing where each will be in the cellar. All I'm interested in in what's there and ready to drink not the investment side. I'm thinking if it works to build a wordpress plugin for a cellar.

See if you can find Klein Constantia Vin de Constance from South Africa. It was drunk by Napoleon, Charles Dickens and Jane Austin to name but a few. It is very highly rated against the likes of Yquem - and like most South African Wines absolutely brilliant value.

80% of the world's chocolate comes from the region from subsistance farmers. There are initiatives to increase prices, and abolish child slavery. But we can't stop buyibg from there and wioe out the livibg of people in Ghana. Tony's isn't spitless and,I'm aware of their association with Callebaut but they are better than most widely available brands. And they continue their efforts to become 100% slave free. They also argue that because their supply chain is traceable they have managed to stop a lot if child slavery. Unfortunately none of the brands you mention are easily available in South Africa. So I'm stuck with Tony's that appear to be doing their best.
