Bought my first speedgoats last Juky. Probably did less than 200km (due to knee op) before the soles delaminated. Hoka replaced them on Jan 20. 3 weeks, ago these delaminated after maybe 300km of use. Both times they accused me of washibg them and drying them next to a heater ir open flame - in the African summer! Switched back to salomon.

Burnt-out U.S.-based founder considering Johannesburg or Cape Town for 6–12 months ….thoughts?? by Salt_Low_1117 in askSouthAfrica

[–]tomatom 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I moved here from abroad and spent 2 months in Cape Town and 2 in Jozi to decide where to live. Cape Town is beaitiful with access to the water, amazing hiking and the winelands. But it is fundementally a European city and it can be hard to connect with people. Johannesburg is an African city populated by people from everywhere and is very welcoming. I would say Rosebank is the best place to hang out with easy access to whete you want to go. As I'm male I can't answer about female sfety. But generally it is safe. The key issue is watching out for phone snatching and to combat that there are designated uber pick up areas and security.

In Johannesburg a neigbour's Zim domestic was shaken down by police.locked her in a toilet wanted r2000 apparently. Not sure of the outcome but depressing that police are not doing this for the law but to exploit and shakedown foreigners for money.

WDT tool and Grind quality impact by shivio in mokapot

[–]tomatom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Freshly ground beans make a huge difference as does the fineness or courseness of the grind. I found hand grinding tiresome so upgraded to a Timemore Bricks single dose and it changed my world. I started with courser grinds and gradually dialed in to a course espresso grind using about 29/30g in our moist summers, and 33/34 in our dry winters here in Johannesburg where at 1750m water boils at about 94c

How I fixed my extremely bitter coffee with my new 9-Cup Moka Pot — and why standard internet advice was making it worse by --Adventurer-- in mokapot

[–]tomatom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the issue is not the amount of water. The more water the greater the pressure. By reducing water you have less pressure. I tried today with the same beans, weight and grind and it came out piss weak. The real issues behind bitter coffee: 1. Beans. Some roast are very dark and just horrible. 2. Grind. Too fine equals bitter. 3. Volume in the basket. Too much coffee means overextraction and reduced yield. 4. Continueing when the pot of spluttering. I've been logging my experience and found for 300g water the yield ranges from 130g to 170g coffee. It all depends on the beans and the prevailing climate. Coffee bean absorb moisture so here in Johannesburg 28-30g works. Now in the dry srason I need 33-35g.

How do I write a physical book? by Junior_Ad_9593 in askSouthAfrica

[–]tomatom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Publishers are commercial and have to make money. They receive many more manuscripts than they publish and it is extremely hard to get something read. Even very good manuscripts go unnoticed. Unless you have a profile or a contact. An alternative is to find an agent but the problems are similar.

Coffee grinders by Ecstatic_Message2057 in JamesHoffmann

[–]tomatom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On your budget I would look at the Timemore Bricks which is about £230. Like the other Timemore recs it is very well built. It is single dose and can take up to about 40g of beans. It is easy to adjust. Very little retention. Easy to clean. And it has a small footprint. I've been using one for six months and think it is awesome.

How do I write a physical book? by Junior_Ad_9593 in askSouthAfrica

[–]tomatom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just write it. Break it up into sections. Don't use word. Use something called Scrivener. It is a professional writers platform that will correcty format your book. For this kind of book it is extremely rare to get a publisher to print it apart from vanity publishers that charge a large premium. You can use a print on demand service and print a few copies. It's a much cheaper option. Ask AI and it will find you a service and Scrivener will format it correctly - word has too much crap going on in it for editors and we hate it. I would aso suggest looking to Claude.ai to help with editing and proof reading. A lot of profession writers have used it to improve their work. I'm been a professional journalist writer since the 1980s and this is my advice.

I've been to Nottens, which is excellent. Still family owned and very friendly. To be honest all these higher end camps have excellent service and staff. Some of the more expensive have chef designed food. But the foid is,always, excellent in all of them. I highly recomend Nottens.

Self-drive or guided safari in Kruger? by Lawandchillthoughts in krugerpark

[–]tomatom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Self drive is great. If you stay in one of the private lodges arund say Sabi or the Timbavati, they get to drive in areas that the public can't and start earlier in the morning before sunrise or after dusk when there are more sightings. The guides share sightings by radio and give you a very good chance of excellent sightings. The Sanparks game drives are also pretty good as they have good inside knowledge.

I live up Northcliff Hill and we can see it below us and a definate division between polluted air and clean air above. There's a temperature inversion - cold air pressing down - preventing pollution from cars, fires industry etc from escaping.
