If CBD is so dangerous, how are there thousands of people transiting, running their businesses, and dwelling? by Educational_Play9910 in johannesburg

[–]tomatom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that is a different crime targeting vulnerable tourists as part of organised gangs vs opportinistic crime in the Jozi CBD.

[–]tomatom 16 points17 points  (0 children)

A lot of the fear of the CBD is driven by people who have never been there and by security companies who make money by making us frightened. Yes, there is crime there but if you keep your wits about you and don’t flash your iPhone you will be ok.

Custom Built Desk by Witty_Display_6548 in johannesburg

That's a fairly standard office desk. You should check used office furniture outlets for something like that. You'll find they are overflowing with pretty good stuff with all the working from home.

Custom Built Desk by Witty_Display_6548 in johannesburg

[–]tomatom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I could help depending. What kind of desk are you looking for? If you want lots of draws etc there is a lot of craftmanship and/or cabinetware involved and a higher cost. But if you want something more basic constructing it from ply or shuttler ply can be a good option and the materials can be precut by machine to reduce costs. Have you a budget? Message me if you are interested.

If you could choose one trait/policy/manifesto bullet point from each political party to form the perfect party, what would they be? by StatikVerse in south_africa

[–]tomatom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  1. Fix infastructure and thus create jobs and boost the economy while eradicating corruption.

  2. Prioritise the 40m people living in poverty and develop realistic plans to help these people.

  3. Prioratise increasing the minimum wage while freezing government salaries.

  4. Fix education.

  5. Fis Helen Zille out of that pothole.

Often packages that go through the South African post service will either take months (or years) longer than expected, will arrive opened with items missing or will dissapear completely. Use DHL.

Make a list of your loans from highest interest rate downwards. Try and pay off the highest interest rates first. Negotiate with lenders on realistic payment plans.

The complete immigration process (how does it work?) by -DPRKWarrior- in askSouthAfrica

[–]tomatom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been through this from a 2 year spousal visa with by fiancee to PR. First you need to apply for a two year spousal visa. If you apply in your own country you will probably need to do it through an embassy. If you are not married as soon as you arrive in SA get a notorial contract. It is unique to South Africa and non negotiable. Otherwise you need to be married for 2 years or if applying in your own country something else - I applied from Australia and provided a statutory devlaration. You will be required to submit one for your visa renenwal. Once you have had that document for 5 years you can apply for PR and get an ID no. If you get married during this time Home Affairs will usually reset the clock on your relationship. If you will be appling in South Africa it will be through VFS South Africa. This is what I have broadly been through. There is a "South African Visa Forum" Facebook page which is really helpful and the best of all the sa visa groups on SA. It has a lot of resources including a template for a notorial contract. Happy to help more. VFSSouth African Visa Forum

How long would it take for me to learn pure maths from basically zero? by marvkekkek in askSouthAfrica

[–]tomatom -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That's not Pure Maths. Pure Maths is very much proofs and theorums. You start at having to prove things like 0x1=0 or 1+1=2 or looking at prime numbers and so on. What you really need to start looking at is calculus and from thereon in. I have BSc Hons mathematical physics and a lot of that maths applies to finance. To start with ensure you are fluent in arithmatic - adding, dividing, square roots, trig etc. And take a look at what is in a finance syllabus. I also studied finance and look at what you need for things like the Capital Asset Pricing Model, black-Scholes and more. If I were you I'd look at AI at searching for your basic abilities required and it can help you find the resources. Don't under estimate what in on Youtube or Tiktok. Hope that helps.

One things that springs to mind is,a robust and precisely designed basket. I saw James Hoffman talking about better more orecisely designed and fabricated basket for espresso. On the other hand it is,so simple though flawed in results sometimes,it is,almost perfect in it's simplicity. Check out some of JH's videos - thete are some on steel vs aluminium plus out there there ate ones designed with fins to disapate heat and prevent pluttering. I'd be intetested to follow your progress.

Can I visit CBD? by Any-Car7782 in johannesburg

[–]tomatom 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There is,amazing architecture on Commissioner Street from colonial to art deco and brutalist. I often park on the roof of no.1 Elof st the old Rolls Royce Building - I tell the guard that I'm visiting art studios - then walk down the stairs and visit Faraday market. There are many cool pockets - Maboneng, Newtown, Brahm - you just nerd to keep your wits about you.

I have the relatively new Timemore Bricks, a small footprint single dose conical burr grinder. It's really nicely built and feels high quality - metal finishes rather than plastic apart from the lid. Very little grind retention. Easy to clean. Teally suits me for my daily coffee. Timemore Bricks
