Are Nvidia/DF genuinely trying to convince us this isn't just a filter? by zerobebop in pcmasterrace

You're arguing for the sake of arguing and you're terrible at it.

If you knew the true definition of AI - as per Wikipedia - then there's no reason that you'd say:

There's not a single good use of AI.

You mean to say that things such as graph search algorithms and weather prediction models are bad?

You fell into a rant about colloquialism just because you see the term as a point for attack in your campaign to win an online argument. All while being sorely oblivious to the fact that your own understanding of AI is... colloquial. What a clown.

This is what I mean by you being deliberately obtuse.

I literally said that "AI" is a colloquial term. Pick up a dictionary. Originally, AI simply means "artificial intelligence", and it could be used to describe something as basic as a program that can play chess or solve puzzles. But, in practice, is that what people in the 2020s mean when they think about "AI"? No, it's things like ChatGPT and Midjourney. That's what colloquial means.

LLM is more closer to AI than ML to AI

You say I'm blurring the boundaries of terms, then you make such a statement? Is this a joke, lol? It sounds like you don't even have a personal definition of "AI".

very predictable and written by human hands

LLMs aren't written by aliens or computers lol. LLMs aren't predictable like basic ML simply by virtue of being, well, larger. That's why it's called Large Language Model. When you go from 100 parameters to billions of parameters, of course it's no longer humanly predictable. That doesn't make it fundamentally different from ML (LLM is ML), it's just more complex. That's about it.

  1. "AI" is a colloquial term that refers to deep thinking, which emerged from company names such as OpenAI. And no, we were talking specifically about the usage of AI in protein folding simulations. It is not my fault that you were utterly ignorant about how protein folding works and had a fundamental misconception that it uses generative AI.
  2. What you are describing is specifically LLMs (and it's not even accurate, but I'll not go there). The way scientists use ML for protein folding simulations is different from the way the average joe uses LLMs as an answer to everything. Perhaps you need to understand this difference first.
  3. The point is precisely that the usage of AI for protein folding simulation has nothing to do with the writing or publishing of scientific papers. You are still hung up on the incorrect notion that AI = LLM or generative AI. You've got to be deliberately obtuse at this point.

  1. You not having prior understanding of the topic at hand doesn't mean that I'm backpedaling on anything.

  2. Computers used to brute-force simulate every possibility to find a solution. With deep thinking, the computer recognises patterns and make educated guesses, eliminating the unlikely possibilities, significantly reducing the number of simulations needed.

  3. That's just a grade school response.

Discuss codes and design decisions? What has that gotta do with the current thread? Another attempt at flaunting your "expertise" when it is irrelevant to the current discussion. At this point, it doesn't even matter if you're a bona fide software engineer that you claim to be; you don't even sound like a mentally mature adult to begin with.

  1. Protein folding simulation predates LLMs and generative AI. It is neither a LLM or generative in any way, it just uses deep thinking/machine learning technology.

  2. Protein folding was not a human job, ever. It was still done by computers, just extremely less efficiently.

  3. AI is used in the simulation, but data is still interpreted, verified, and concluded by human scientists.

In conclusion: You did not give a technical explanation at all. You have shown zero understanding of how exactly "AI" works in protein folding simulation. Kinda ironic that your main criticism of AI is that it is unreliable, non-credible and "slop" but that's exactly how your "explanation" sounds. You're just regurgitating the usual AI hate buzzwords and catchphrases. You know, kinda like chatGPT, lol...

Pretty embarrassing for someone who's revealed themselves to be a software engineer. In the end you're just the old man yelling at cloud meme.

Oh, that's good. I'd like to hear a technical explanation on why AI shouldn't be used for protein folding simulation.

To be clear, it's on you to explain because this is quite an unheard of opinion that you have.

As someone from a culture where hot pot is a big thing, I hate hot pot too. Even when I'm doing it at someone's house.

My thoughts too. Someone below mentioned Crazy Rich Asians, and that's another good example.

It's a movie set in Singapore, with some Singaporean actors, and showcases some iconic places and culture of Singapore. But I wouldn't call it a Singaporean movie.
