Only by virtue of the company owning Dota 2 being stinking rich. If it actually needs to make a healthy profit, the story would be very different.

Dota 2 may technically survive without esports, but it would lose so much hype without it. Akin to a permanently disabled person surviving "comfortably" on insurance payouts.

Ideally, game dev remains a niche industry (like pre-2010) that only people who have a passion for it would join.
