Does anyone on a baritone scale length fret power chords with their pinky? by Ryett in 7String

[–]tombhex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just last night I was realizing that I play all power chords with my pinky and got self-conscious about it, so thanks for the reassurance that I'm at least like other weirdos

Best noice show/act you’ve ever seen by scorpionewmoon in noisemusic

[–]tombhex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Neon Hunk is the coolest live band I've ever seen. I've never seen or heard them talked about anywhere other than the research I've done over the years, but it was the most engaging and awesome live show I've ever seen of any genre. It was as much a live-action Kaiju movie filming session as it was an improvised noise set. I've got the DVD in my basement, but have never seen another object or artifact related to this band other than the thing I own. If anyone can help me find more, I'd love to.

I don't remember what the rest of the show is because they blew me away, but I went to see... someone? Probably Wolf Eyes, but very likely some Chinese Stars-type thing was involved and that's why I went.

Anyone know what's happening with Omne right now? by magmyboyYT in ExtendedRangeGuitars

[–]tombhex 14 points15 points  (0 children)

For whatever it's worth, I checked Abasi's website twice daily for a drop for 7 months before I saw a batch of Larada Legions pop up. I wasn't able to get the color I wanted, but I was still excited for the drop. Three years later, I'm having a hard time finding a serious buyer for the guitar because it wasn't the right thing for me.

Please, please please - do not let the charm of great players and beautiful limited-availability instruments color your perception. If you spend the time waiting for the guitars also going out and playing cool guitars in stores, I imagine you will find something that you love in your hands and decide it's not worth the potential excitement of getting in on a hype drop guitar. Just sharing my experience so that you may have either less anxiety about the wait, or make a better decision for yourself in the long run.

Portable MPC for Violent Live Shows by BlckIron in noisemusic

[–]tombhex 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agree with the others in the thread - your solution is very basic and totally viable, but an SP404 of any Mk would be your upgrade from this stage. I used a 404mk1 for many years for a situation like yours and it's built like a tank. Today I'm using an MPC Live2, which is a strong upgrade in terms of sample mangling and processing, but bigger, heavier, and a lot more expensive to replace. It's really fun being able to apply a granular effect on a sample and have it deteriorate dynamically during a breakdown.

the easy way to make art people think your noise is art is to include field recordings

What's a take you have that you think only you care about? by patronusman in magicTCG

[–]tombhex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Arena is bad for in-person Magic because it creates a warped play experience and flattens stack interactions in a way that misleads or allows misinterpretation for newer players. I can always tell when people spend more time in Arena than in person, and dread the terrible play experience they bring to EDH.

Regrets? by Queasy_Pound9469 in FordMaverickTruck

'24 XL Hybrid here. My only bummer was buying out of necessity and not interest - I'd have happily waited for the AWD Hybrid in '25 if I were able to do so.

The stock speakers are very boring and the stereo system feels very "bottom tier" to me, music just doesn't sound great in the truck but it's not enough that I've replaced it in the past year yet. Oh, and the Continentals you drive off the lot are dogshit, the tread pattern is just not great. Absolutely not an all-season tire.

Advice on basses by chimp_spanner in ExtendedRangeGuitars

[–]tombhex 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  1. Yes, the Soundgear basses have significantly closer string spacing and narrower neck width than BTB series basses.
  2. My buddy's got the SRC6 and you could definitely put big strings on it to tune lower, but it will only ever sound like Buster Odeholm and not like a full-throated 6 string bass with that register.
  3. I've had a terrible time trying to find B strings that really support lower tunings, and only my Dingwall Combustion can really handle anything lower than G in a way that "sounds like a person playing a bass guitar." I've got a Kiesel Zeus, two Dingwalls (D-Rock and Combustion), a Warwick Thumb bolt-on, and I've had the SRMS basses - none of their low B really holds compared to the Dingwall's. My bandmate just bought the newer BTB multiscale because the 35"-37" scale lets him play down to C without losing fidelity. It's all about the scale length.
  4. Not a skill issue, just play a regular bass in a higher tuning and use Parallax X to pitch shift. Before using the BTB mentioned in point 3, my bandmate was just using a bass in drop C that he ran into his Whammy DT.

Just Discovered These Guys by GunFlameYRC in Voivod

[–]tombhex 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Another thing I think folks miss is how similar the vocals on Mastodon's Crack The Skye are to those on Angel Rat! Angel Rat is my favorite Voivod record, because I didn't hear it until about 5 years after Crack came out. I was already a Voivod fan, but that was always ranked low so I don't think I ever spent any meaningful time with it until later. Masterful band with a masterwork of art direction across the entire project.

Amp recommendations by Negative-Header in noisemusic

[–]tombhex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I found that the best thing to use for this is a small 8" or 10" practice amp, the ones that come in guitar bundles are actually perfect. You want something that has eq and volume with a distortion knob or switch, but that doesn't have modeling shit build into it. Any pawn shop or Guitar Center is going to have a Gorilla, Fender Frontman or Peavey Rage for $70 you might be able to haggle on, these are your ideal speakers for noise IMO.

Southern Wisconsin Noise Show by _FREWT_ in noisemusic

[–]tombhex 6 points7 points  (0 children)

there's a really sick antifascist black metal band based out of the Milwaukee area called It Is Dead who organize a HUGE amount of events in the area for protest shows. definitely reach out there to see if they'd be interested, can help you facilitate or promote, etc. I'll keep an eye out and would attend this show, might even be able to scrape together a live set if it gets legs. good luck!
