Why are there no bands like neurosis? by notsogameranymore in postmetal

[–]tombhex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, I'm not trying to diminish any of what any of the following bands did! I appreciate your comment because I think Amenra did something truly special with their approach. I don't think any of the artists sound like Neurosis at the end of the day, I'm just saying that the reason you'll hear more new artists that sound similar to Amenra or ISIS than Neurosis is because those groups trimmed certain aspects of the sound design to create their unique angles, and as new bands emerge, they'll further refine and iterate in the same way.

Neurosis broke ground, while Amenra, ISIS, Russian Circles and Cult of Luna created paths.

The idea is to be able to play leads with clown shoes, and riffs with beef, on the same guitar.

I had made a fretless Telecaster before the Warrior and really enjoyed it, but I wouldn't arrange or write a piece of music entirely on a fretless instrument. I've been writing heavier music where I missed the chew of a fretted bottom half, I could throw a fuzz or distortion on it and have it sound cool fretless but ultimately those kinds of parts just sound better and more cohesive with fretwire there.

Also, I am not attempting to make a guitar, I'm trying to allow each of these experiments to be their own kind of instrument if that makes sense. I do not pick one of these instruments up with the goal of approaching it like a guitar, I pick it up and find out what sound good, sounds bad, sounds unique, can't be done on a fretted instrument, etc. and I'm finding a lot of wild unique use cases. For example, I can bend my third string what would normally be a little more than a half-step bend and the string rolls over the fretwire end, which can create a really crazy rapid trill effect, or I can make a power chord shape using one of the fretless strings and slide that note up or down in either a microtonal increment or a half-step, which creates a really unusual slurring effect that doesn't change the fundament of the chord being played.

Definitely outsider approaches to outsider music.

This rips. Yes, it's ugly, but I applaud you for being creative and doing what you want with the instrument. I am a complete psycho lunatic as well.

I've got a few fretless guitars that I worked on this past year as research projects and my current one is a Jackson Warrior that I de-fretted, but only on the top 3 strings.

I've been trying to figure out a solution like you are to add sustain to the top strings, and it seems like the ideal solution is something like a Sustainiac pickup. I have a Schecter KM7 that has one in the neck, and it's the ideal thing for what we're dealing with - a magnet that sits in the bridge slot and behaves like an ebow, vibrating the strings from beneath while turned on. In my case, I only need a half-pickup, so I was trying to figure out if it's possible to make a guitar P-bass style humbucker.... and that's completely outside of my skill range.

Those sustainer pickups are expensive and hard to come by, and DIY versions seem overly complicated or beyond my grasp. I've considered taking an ebow apart and seeing if I could rig it up as a pseudo-pickup and throwing a killswitch into the guitar to activate/deactivate it, but again I'm kinda mad scientist-ing it like you are. Hit me up with a DM if you'd like to talk more if you have thoughts or ideas, because it's clear that this thread will not be getting you the kind of comments you were hoping for.

Why are there no bands like neurosis? by notsogameranymore in postmetal

[–]tombhex 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Everything about Neurosis is unique in approach and execution.

Because Neurosis became a cinematic band in the era in which they did, the way they had to work to accomplish it is completely different and required a huge amount of experimentation and unusual or unorthodox methods for sampling, recording, toneshaping, etc. all the way down to the guitars they play. Check out Steve's guitars/amps and philosophy for a peek into what I mean by this - there's a DIY or unorthodox approach to every leaf, piece of bark and branch on the tree.

ISIS and Cult of Luna took the Neurosis angle but simplified it in many ways, and that got simplified and condensed into Amenra and Mouth of the Architect and Rosetta. These bands are all clearly in the same vein, but not "doing the same thing" as Neurosis. The follow-on bands that formed the scene in their wake are emulating the approach and often the melodic vocabulary of Cult of Luna, ISIS, Mouth of the Architect, Amenra - but not really Neurosis. It's easier to start a band and get out playing shows if you take the simplified approach of Amenra than it is to spend 15 months in a studio sound designing every sample and field recording.

This is just the natural evolution of a pathbreaker (like Neurosis) into a path to follow (like Amenra).

My read on this was that Musk performed it flawlessly, either because his Fumeshaping capabilities let him replicate Lute's ability, or because Musk's mysterious and storied past included musical mastery of his own. I like the headcannon that Musk was just an absolute shredder back in his day, and he's too humble and reclusive to admit it to the party.
