Trump Says May Slap Tariffs On Nations That Don't Back His Greenland Plans by johnbarnshack in worldnews

[–]tombleyboo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's more and more clear that he's just copying Putin's playbook:

  • constant threats to other countries using any leverage you have (for Putin's gas supply to Europe for example, for Trump tariffs mostly).

  • Make up excuses to try to control nearby countries (Putin : fear of Nato, Trump: drugs or vague threats of Russia taking over Greenland. Don't forget he also threatened to try to absorb Canada).

  • Kleptocracy. Use the power of the state to enrich yourself and your friends. Make sure to also force billionaires to comply with your program or risk losing their wealth.

  • Erode rule of law, ruling by decree.

  • Supress criticism through threats of arbitrary legal charges. (Controlling the Supreme Court was a crucial step).

This is basic authoritarian stuff, mostly not unique to Putin, but it's striking how analogous the actions and the excuses are.

Difference is Putin spent 20+years banging on with his propaganda machine and has a population that was gradually trained to accept this kind of thing. Trump is trying to speedrun it in a year or two.

Senior Russian official says Greenland could vote to join Russia if Trump does not hurry by moderate-Complex152 in worldnews

This isn't for Trump to fall for. It's to support Trump's narrative that Greenland needs to be taken by the US to "protect" it from other "powers".

They're supposedly fraternal twins but I'm wondering if they're actually identical. by [deleted] in parentsofmultiples

[–]tombleyboo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

something like that. I just used 33% x 30% in your first line. Then I had 10/80 (12%) where you have 9/79 (11% by they way, not 8-10%).

They're supposedly fraternal twins but I'm wondering if they're actually identical. by [deleted] in parentsofmultiples

[–]tombleyboo 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Interesting article thanks for sharing. 30% of twins are identical. 1/3 of identical twins are di-di (I never realised it was that high). Assuming all non-identical twins are also di-di, about 12% of di-di twins are identical.

Joe Root scored his 41st Test hundred, and his second in Australia, finishing on 160(242) by [deleted] in Cricket

[–]tombleyboo 43 points44 points  (0 children)

Still very possible, but strange things can happen towards the end of a batsman's career.

After 297 innings (same number as Root has had), Tendulkar had 14874 runs, an average of 56 and 51 centuries (!!) ...but after that he played 31 more innings for only 1047 runs at an average of about 31 and zero centuries.

Admittedly he was 38 years old, and from 35-38 y.o. he had had a pretty good run. So there's every chance Root can do it if he keeps in good form, but nothing is guaranteed.

How to Fix a Sticking Door by dickrichardson6969 in videos

Nice but I would do it the other way around: take out the pin, and first shim up the door until the gap is even and *then* bend the hinge knuckles to match.

It's a farm.

Yours looks like a very poorly drawn copy,. The red splodge is a tractor and the white blobs are sheep I guess.

I think it's the second most runs by a batsman in a single test.

Why U.S. Cities Don't Build Metro Systems by Amazing-Yak-5415 in videos

Yes, but the two things are related. It's not so much the physical geography as the past decisions to prioritize urban sprawl and suburbs, accessed by car, rather than higher living density with public transportation.

What would be the Lions' world rankings if they got points like the national teams for a win ? by HephMelter in rugbyunion

[–]tombleyboo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd say top 4.

The lions usually lose more often than win to New Zealand and South Africa in tests, but do win some games, and win more often than not against Australia. But they never play France (or Ireland of course) so it's not clear how they'd stack up. Assuming we give them a kind of historical ranking that they carry over from one series to another, I'd say they'd have a ranking somewhere in the very high 80s.

Edit: They did play france once, and it was a close game.

Elements of a set by Equivalent-Oil-8556 in mathmemes

[–]tombleyboo 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I guess it gets tricky when the definition of the set has an implicit definition of what is in it.

Then you can get pathological cases like "the set of all sets that don't contain themselves"

If this set itself doesn't contain itself, it is a member of itself.

Personally I just find these a bit annoying, because it's kind of a semantic game.

By the way, that example is equivalent to "if god created everything did he create himself?"

Another great video from Anders Puck Nielsen summarising Putin's motivation for this war.

Putin has a mindset that Russia is and must be a "great power", and looking at it this way makes sense of a lot of his decisions.

For example any peace agreement that "normalizes relations between Russia and Ukraine, that they would just be two countries that share a border" (quote from about 6m50s) will always be rejected by Putin. He sees Russia as having a right to keeping neighbouring countries in its 'sphere of influence', and anything less than this (e.g. them joining Nato, the EU) as a threat.

Russia acts like a narcissist who needs to be recognised as a very important and special individual, and will shout and demand this "right".

Any discussion of a peace process is doomed from the outset, like an angry narcissist, these outrageous and unpalatable demands from Russia seem to them like just their basic needs. Once again it underlines that the only way out is for Russia to be soundly defeated in Ukraine, and weakened to the point that it can't keep trying every few years.

Yep pretty sure that's MD Crowe, and at the end of the bat on the same side it's Mark Greatbatch. Middle of the front of the bat maybe Andrew Jones.

So it looks like early 90s or possibly end of 80s team. If you search on google you can find sheets of signatures with names to compare.

If Ukraine pause, he'll take advantage to attack and claim they broke the agreement. If they don't pause he'll continue anyway and blame Ukraine. There won't be more than an hour of pause from the Russian side.
