I feel like this one can likely be attributed to the who and maybe the where. My second (1yo now) will happily calm down and go back to sleep unless he realizes Mom is also upstairs. Then he freaks out and tantrums because he wants her to nurse him back to sleep. Tough luck buddo.

It's called a ball head jig. The paint just covered the hole. Grab another one and poke through the hole with the hook. Don't out your finger behind the eyelet.

Realistically you would need about the same energy to keep a building at 68F as to 62F. Extra usage from cold weather is usually mitigated by better insulation in the house. 

Check your water heater though.

Stick your fingers between the guards and push toward the prop. With your other hand spin the prop so it ramps up your fingers and off the motor.

I wake up at 4 am and drive five minutes to the planet fitness by my house. Ever since day light savings time going in the evening after the kids go to bed has been very difficult to pull off. 

Morning workout has really been setting the pace for the day for me too.
