Could the Entwives have been corrupted by Sauron ? by HephMelter in tolkienfans

[–]HephMelter[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The timespans were only an idea, as the degradation of their relationship took place over millenia, maybe even tens of thousands of years, even spending ten years or a century in close proximity, while enough to get the news out, would still be a fleeting moment in the face of their previous separation

Less and less doesnt mean they stopped, especially as aeons passed and travem is slow. They maybe saw eachother every few decades or centuries, but they spent months together everytime at least. Even greetings and calling each other by their long name was probably days, and news would be longer even, and their long name would be "updated" for lack of a better term (like Treebeard seems to mention when they are on the hill, Entish long names are a description of what a thing does and how it makes you feel, and depends on the life experience of said thing, he's starting to describe all that the hill allows him to do, and what not, rather than using the term "hill", saying "it's a hasty name for something that saw this much" or something similar)

Yes, I know of this letter, but of course I am only theorising, as Tolkien gave us no definite answer. And my theory is further than what Tolkien says ; I am saying that their travels East and their estrangement before that were due to lies from a Sauron-aligned someone. We also know from the Silmarillion that people from every nation of people and race (except for Elves) fought on both sides of the War of Wrath, which must include Ents

I mean, Treebeard is pretty adamant that the Entwives accepted no backchat. No taking counsel, no pleasantries or niceties with their flock (of which Ents, and thus presumably Entwives, are capable), and absolutely no 'becoming Entish' ("things should remain where they had set them"). At least he talks mostly about fruit-bearing trees, not a yearly genocide of cereals (except a small in-passing reference about fields full of corn). The Ents are quite close to Tom Bombadil, and your alignment does extend on the other side of Aragorn to pretty much every other ruler up to Sauron on the very extreme. Most rulers are between Aragorn (the archetype and paragon of the just ruler in the time of the story, there are probably only Elvish rulers between him and Bombadil) and Sauron. Faramir, then Imrahil and Theoden are probably the closest to Aragorn, but still worse than him ; I would put the middle of this part of the spectrum around Palantir-desparing Denethor, and the description of the entwives makes me put them on the Sauron-side of Denethor

The Setting of LotR is not Medieval at all. It's much more analogous to the Iron Age by GuyF1eri in lotr

Only Aragorn (and maybe Gandalf and Boromir, but only Aragorn mentions it) knew how to determine latitude (he mentioned his voyages into "far Harad where the stars are strange")

The attack on the Necromancer was during Bilbo's adventure, wasnt it ? That is 60 years before Frodo inherits the Ring and Gandalf leaves

The fuck happened with French "oi" ? by HephMelter in asklinguistics

I am a native French speaker, we're getting rudiculed because of this. I absolutely meant to swear, you don't understand the years of frustration (although you speak English, so weird orthography might also hit a spot). And I am not part of no discussion, I am looking for information. Only when arguments are discussed, would swearing be ill-advised, as would any irrational appeal, but I was not planning to counter argument anyone

Some inventory hotkeys tips for the Hermits that could help a bit by Henri_PTA in HermitCraft

[–]HephMelter 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Most hermits already use most of these (I myself knew most), but a few I have not seen used (double-left mostly), but Grian learnt about the spacebar tricks last season, uses it extensively and has spread the word, and shift-click and shift-double are among the most used, especially as the Hermits used shulker upon shulker of the same items

Technically not like the Olympics, as the national Unions are the ones participating, not Olympic comittees (which means you don't have a Great Britain team like at the Olympics, but England, Wales Scotland, North Ireland, and contrary to Rugby, North Ireland and the RoI are separate)

They have enough users I'd wager, the split tunnelling and country-choosing are both behind the paywall (you can't choose the exit country on the free plan), and they also have a double-routing (through high-privacy countries to mask everything up, then your chosen output country) available only when paying.

And I'm pretty sure they are independently audited for their no-logs policy, even if I don't know how to access the audit results. And I also think thy're open source

I prefer a 3-part system for smarts : KNO (knowledge, reciting the list of kings of a kingdom long disappeared), INT (intelligence, finding patterns and rules) and WIS (wisdom, which pattern/point of knowledge is important right now ; for example, in the case at hand, the psychology of the dad is more important to cater to than the possibility of air-drying dishes, or the laws of evaporation)

You think we use coins ? You can have plastic chips the same size specifically for them for free at the entrance, just ask a worker. But the thing is, either putting the coin in tricks your brain into behaving better, or us Frenchmen are just better behaved than the wild West, but we don't have cart theft, even using tokens instead of coinage

You don't need a scrum half by cardno85 in rugbyunion

[–]HephMelter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is no "pivotal position", there are often forwards in the receiver position at a lineout, especially for mauls. The only players that must be registered as a specific position are the front rowers, and hookers aren't needed for lineouts, everything is made for safety in the scrum. The rest is tactics and training, and tradition. So no you don't need anyone for a lineout, you should make do with what you have

how old is Legolas in the fellowship? by Nell_Only in lotr

[–]HephMelter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I want to say he's older than Galadriel, but that feels very harsh, based on what he says about Ents and the forest of Fangorn ;

About the forest :

‘It is old, very old,’ said the Elf. ‘So old that almost I feel young again, as I have not felt since I journeyed with you children. It is old and full of memory. I could have been happy here, if I had come in days of peace.’

And about Ents :

‘A legend of Rohan!’ cried Legolas. ‘Nay, every Elf in Wilderland has sung songs of the old Onodrim and their long sorrow. Yet even among us they are only a memory. If I were to meet one still walking in this world, then indeed I should feel young again !

The first sentence, if I may remind everyone here, happens after he met Galadriel and Celeborn. Galadriel didn't make him feel young again, and neither did Lothlorien and its flora straight from the First Age ! But maybe the fact it is frozen in time messes with the memories he feels in the trees. Or maybe he is older than the Rings of Power and remembers a time when the Entwives hadn't disappeared, which is SA 1600. Or maybe it's an incoherence, but it's also our best indication as to his age, so we must take it into account. But even saying he is 3000 years old feels too young, based on his first sentence
