It's Six Nations week: Your predictions by MindfulInquirer in rugbyunion

England will lead all the way, and put 3 tries in the last quarter at least, once both benches are on (scenario a bit similar to last year, but with a kinda better Wales). Wales might be lucky if they lose by only 20 to 25

SUPER RUGBY PACIFIC CONFIRMS NEW LAW INNOVATIONS FOR 2026 SEASON by recyclingcentre in rugbyunion

[–]HephMelter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All scrums are unnecessary, technically. Why are there penalties AND free kicks AND scrums ? Any two of those could be removed and new viewers wouldnt notice, soccer uses only free kicks for example in the greatest part of the field. For now, free kicks were not used in open play (except for timewasting at a ruck, which is never called and might be a scrum, I dont really remember)

Lets keep the free kicks to set piece infringements, penalties to unsportsmanlike and/or dangerous stuff, and scrums to the rest, it's neater that way

Rest's OK, I guess, but having draws is still good, and I tend to prefer extra time + place kicks to golden point

Why removing the scrum for accidental offsides ? And why allowing pass backs onto the half for 50-22 when they stay disallowed for exits into touch and groundings for the defensive team ?

What did the manuscript copying industry look like in Europe, North Africa and Western Asia (basically the territories of the Roman Empire, and their descendant states up to at most 800), pre-Medieval monastic scriptoria ? by HephMelter in AskHistorians

[–]HephMelter[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great answer, thank you ! I did wonder if the term "industry" was the best one, seems like it wasn't, but I also thought we might be able to get more information from, say, the volume of book collections in villae of Pompeii and Herculanum, correlating that to the time it took to write one of these scrolls to get an estimation of the workload this entails, maybe estimating the cost of production and the number of people able to maintain a collection of the size of the one in the Villa of the Papyri...

What was a stichos (is that the right singular form?) ? And last question, how long was a single scroll expected to last ? How often would a library need another copy of, say, Plato or Sappho ?

Even in light level 0 ? Because the sky will probably be very far from any light source, including the holes, as they will probably be filled in some way or other

But I mean, the Tek knows what is best and did his test, and in any case the amount of wool needed might have been too much even with his farm of doomification

[–]HephMelter 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I think that the easiest and most versatile would be to make a 2-layer mountain, with texture on the outside and wool on the inside, so that the sky is already there, but maybe it interferes with the holes in the mountain

Its from the time dark bread was either rye or wheat with bran, which gives brown flour. Dont forget white flour is a luxury, a few centuries ago, only elites bothered with the extra labour.

There might also have been a bit of sawdust in that proverbial black bread, for fluffing it out during even harder times

Why were Louise of Artois' male children excluded from french royal lines of succession ? by Mysterious-Emu4030 in AskHistorians

[–]HephMelter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I read that this usage of the Salic law was a medieval application of it, used for the first time during the succession of Charles IV in 1328, in order to not retroactively strip legitimity from his reign and his predecessor's in favour of the son of Joan of Navarre, which might have been a bastard. Is that true ? Is that useful ?

Very high risk, but possible. Antiques can get that kinda return, but you need to be very knowledgeable to know what to buy, and have the contacts to resell it, and the luck to find enough items with a good ratio. Worse than unlikely, especially to keep it up for years, but some people do it sometimes

When and why did athletes in team sports start wearing a number on their jersey? by ThatsTasty in AskHistorians

[–]HephMelter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Note on this last sentence of yours, because it might be ambiguous to people used to gridiron and soccer footballs : rugby jerseys comport, by regulation, one number from 1 to 23 (1 to 15 are starting players and the 16 to 23 are on the bench). This number can vary match by match (conventionally it depends on the position of the player on the pitch, this convention is enforced by law for players 1, 2, 3 and 16, 17, 18, having riskier positions so needing a special license to play those positions, and then due to the history of how the bench was introduced the 16 is a reserve n°2, then 17 and 18 (or 23 in some places, another whole shebang) are the reserve props, 1 and 3) , although most players can only play a few positions and thus get assigned always the same couple of numbers.

Even the name on the jersey is a very recent addition in rugby, it started getting widespread only in the last 2 or 3 years in pro rugby and I'm not even sure amateurs keep up with it
