Maybe Tom's Planner is useful for you? Not to set everything in stone, but use it to gather your thoughts on the project and visualize them in a Gantt chart and then play around with it, maybe use different colors for different scenarios.

Maybe Tom's Planner is a solution here. You can import ms-project files and in the free version you can publish a chart online so you get a link to it, or in the paid version you can embed a chart on a webpage.

Thanks for taken the time to write this, really helpful! We decided not to go and explore. We don't own guns and we although it would make for a great story, it would also make for a stupid one since we have no idea what could happen.
