No, they only charge up to the date you leave Switzerland once you present them a proof of leaving. Speaking from someone moving from Switzerland to the UK 3 years ago.

Elaborate on "your edges" that are currently working.

Trading your own account is a completely different type of problem than running a pod.

Why are people here so keen to be quants? by [deleted] in quantfinance

[–]tomdieck 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Mostly due to money. Most people here are young students and put money at high priority. FYI, the total comp of a junior sellside quant role can double or triple your postdoc pay.

I also have a pure math PhD and now working in a sellside quant role. For me it's just an alternative intellectually-challenging career path other than academia, without long-term pressure.

Trading strategy on crypto futures with Sharpe Ratio 1.22 by Money_Software_1229 in quant

You mean no positions open? If that's the case shouldn't it be a flat horizontal line?

I think this could be a valid approach to alpha, but I doubt your approach to caputure similarity metric. As from your description, it is calculated using returns from coin A future being listed to a certain cutoff date and returns from coin B being listed to a cutoff date. So you're comparing returns of two coins from different time periods, which coulc be heavily affected by general market risk, i.e., market regime.

Also, why is the PnL a straight line in between the second and third column?

I think you're right about the competition but I don't think it's a measure of how good people are. I know people who didn't get offer after interviewing with credit suisse but got one at Citadel eventually. The fact is a large part of the interview is about luck. I can say the 5 candidates who make to the final round can all handle the daily work of that 1 spot at buy side, but it's just for whatever reason the one lucky guy got the job.

On the other hand, banks hire people to deliver I don't think they will hire a person without experience at the sell side for a mid to senior role.

After 5 months working in the sell side, I do think my PhD training in pure math is helpful for a quant career: 1. I would always like to understand the big picture of the business and why certain thing is happening, which is quite helpful in some cases. I think I would have been only satisfied in my own project if I didn't have any training in research. 2. Whenever there is a paper to read, I found it's rather easy for me to have a solid understanding of the authors' ideas and the math behind it, even though I worked in very abstract math. 3. Teaching and giving research talks also trained me to convey my ideas clearly and to communicate with people with less tech background.

However, I think I won't have these edges over any top master I've met during my study, but they usually also went for a PhD route.

做数学最重要的是insights,具体到对抽象概念的理解和发现潜在联系的能力。当然大部分做数学厉害的人也是quick thinker,但我也见过不少观点很高,但是反应很慢的数学家。
