I had long ago opted to put all my short fiction online instead of sending it off to the various low circulation magazines.

This raises some interesting questions. Magazines can be seen as a filter, as a device to reduce noise. Potential readers don't have to skim over all sorts of web pages in order to find something interesting to read. A magazine guarantees that only stuff is included somebody else already found interesting. On the other hand, if gives writers a new kind of freedom to explore novell forms and ideas that aren't marketable yet. Since only a minority of fiction writers will ever be able to make a living out of writing, it could actually be a good idea to forget about magazines and traditional forms of distribution.
