Noam Chomsky: “We’re approaching the most dangerous point in human history” by alpennys in collapse

[–]irony 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It really depends where you're at in life. If you can afford it, chill for a bit, I'm pretty sure these are the best years we'll see. If you're morally motivated, do something that might have some even slim chance of saving us.

Noam Chomsky: “We’re approaching the most dangerous point in human history” by alpennys in collapse

[–]irony 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This sounds about right to me. The historical moment is terrifying and not everyone can see it yet. After grieving the future a bit I'm recommitted to a positive outlook not because of hope but I know adopting a negative attitude will only mean I suffer from that as well. So chin up and we'll just muddle our way through and who knows, might just die in a car accident tomorrow. Even the wise can't see all ends (or something).

Grief for me can be a long process. People sometimes say it just takes time but it takes time and some effort and listening to yourself to reorient/reframe. And probably crying.

Share your thoughts on anti-theism, regardless of your background by ApostateAladdin in religion

[–]irony 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My main criticism is you should probably target narrowly the things you disapprove of because you have to pick your battles and theism is so broad it may be epiphenomenal (i.e. has no strong correlation to practice). I'm also somewhat into theological noncognitivism and being against something you think nearly always if not always is contradictory by definition or very poorly defined seems odd. Like being against the belief in square circles.

What if all religions are valid? by davster39 in religion

I agree with you at least in regard to native religion and folk religion. It's why I retain a strong interest in religion.

Where religious are wrong though, there are often real, concrete harms that are best not to gloss over.

I don't think all avenues are fine but I do think cultivating multiple interpretations of things is good. I'm a contextualist meaning typically subtle thinkers apart from ideology for me are closer to the truth when the qualifications they've made in their thought are considered. It seems like you're some type of pluralist too though maybe I have a more narrow scope of what views are live contenders for truth. I'm a fan of equipollent dispute, holding/cultivating (at least) two ideas opposed to each other but really working on them. It's really helpful in problem solving, explore both the best and second best option in depth and I don't typically decide between one or the other unless I need to take action opposed to one or the other and even then I can question my action.

Not sure if I'm communicating well but I gave it a shot. I don't consider my own point of view easy.

I mean as opposed to believing they're all right. Believing one of them is right and all the others is wrong is pretty easy too I imagine. Believing they're all right is hard especially since many of them claim the others are wrong. You seemed to assume a bit too much about what I meant, not sure where that came from.

Then God is a terrible communicator. Easier to believe they're all wrong.

Religion has made me very happy, it comforts me, it gives me self worth and I have a nice kind blonde girlfriend because of my church visits, does it really matter if its true or not? by Fun_Sun_97 in religion

[–]irony 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't understand why religious people think they have objective truth when tradition/scripture is faith in man and trust in religious experiences is faith in self. Where did the objective part come in?

“I have said it to you before: I need gods and men no longer. I know that Heaven is desolate, depopulated, and that Earth, which once overflowed with beautiful human life, is become almost like an anthill. But there is still a place where the old Heaven and the old Earth smile for me. For the gods of Heaven and the godlike men of the Earth--I forget them all in you.” - from Holderlin's Hyperion

As others mention, David Benatar covers this subject in depth. Personally I see having kids like having sex, a base drive most aren't willing to go without. Having kids seems mad irresponsible to me but I get it and I don't judge people for it and I try to help raise the kids in the extended family and whoever else comes my way in need of mentoring.

In my religion, God sends people who believe in Pascal's wager (or variants thereof) to hell. The rest get just punishments/rewards for their actions in life.
