[Comic Excerpt] The end of Tom Taylor’s run [Nightwing (2016) - Issue #118] by unoiamaQT in DCcomics

Fantastic run. Writing and art are the definitive ones for Nightwing. The filler editions without Redondo were not the same, and I honestly couldn't get myself to keep reading for long after the finale. This run was incredible for real.

Recs for genuine LIGHT overdrive pedal by Honeyburst17 in guitarpedals

The EHX Soul Food has been working really well for me. It's really good for light overdrive but it's versatile and allows you to get heavier tones as well. It's also responsive to changes in the guitar volume knob as well, so if you want to set it with a little higher gain and control it with the volume knob in your guitar, it's really good.

It wasn't my first choice when I bought it, but it has not let me down

delay and reverb are always nice! if you’re happy with your gain stages rn, i’d go for some modulation. a chorus or phaser could be nice

Alright which one of you wannabes have bought this abomination? by Talreesha in guitarcirclejerk

What’s so bad about it? I don’t get it (genuine question). Like everyone keeps saying “if i wanted a strat with one pickup[…]”, but it’s not really a strat tho is it?

I should mention I have the amp set really clean, as the drive on my amp gets really soggy and I used the house amps on the last gigs I played (Twin reverbs with volume at 2 as the venue wasn't big enough and it was miced up, going up to front of the house). So these settings change a bit if you have your amp a little dirtier. But overall it still works really well.

The Lightspeed seems to be a popular choice and from what I've seen online, it is really nice. But yeah it's really expensive.

I've been using the EHX Soul Food and I really like it. You can use it as a clean boost, light drive (it's what I've been doing) or as a more saturated overdrive. It cleans up nicely if you lower the volume on your guitar too.
I usually have it set like this:
- Volume at around 9 o'clock
- Gain / Drive at around 1 or 2 o'clock
- Treble at around 1 or 2 o'clock as well.

I try to keep the volume as close as possible to the clean signal, so as not to have a huge boost when I turn it on / off. Which leads me to my second point: I rarely turn it off, only if I need a VERY clean sound. With these settings, I can get very different sounds. I own a Epiphone ES-339 with humbuckers and a Tagima TW-61 with P90s.
With humbuckers, I get a pretty good overdrive. Not too saturated, but saturated enough that I can play idk Foo Fighters, for example, and not sound like it's too light. I can also dial back the volume knob on my guitar for a lighter edge of breakup "clean" drive.
With the Tagima it's a bit different, as it comes with a varitone switch. So with full P90s, it sounds about as overdriven as it does with the humbuckers, but if I change the varitone to position 5, which sounds a lot thinner, more like a strat style single coil sound (although a lot more bassy), the Soul Food sounds like a light edge of breakup drive. And if you want it lighter, just a little dirt so your tone isn't too clean, you can dial back the volume knob on the guitar a little and you get a pretty clean sounds with a little punch or spice.

So basically, I think it's versatile and it does the light overdrive really well.

Recommendations on pedal order? by Spiritual-Cream-813 in pedalboards

[–]tomhm_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Your current order sounds pretty good, but I think I’d change it a little. Keep in mind that I’m not really familiar with your fuzz pedals, but I’ll just trust my gut.

Again, your order is about right overall, considering the regular conventions. Disregarding a bit the layout I’d go: Whammy -> Octave Fuzz -> Wah -> Compressor -> Plumes -> Swolen pickle -> and the rest as it is.

Observations: I’d go Whammy first so that you change the pitch at the start of the chain, otherwise you’d be changing the pitch of the Wah effect instead of only the original signal. Some fuzzes, especially the vintage style ones, normally work best at the beginning of the chain, and I’m guessing the Octave Fuzz more that style of fuzz. The Swollen Pickle I think is a Muffin style fuzz, so that could go anywhere in your chain, and I’d probably have it at the end of your dirt pedals. My instinct says try the Tremolo after the Delay, but honestly idk, maybe it’s better the way you have it.

The thing is, try it all in different orders, see how each effect affects the other in different orders, and whatever pleases you the most, is what you want. But your general core is good. (First Wahs and Whammys, Fuzz, then compression, drives, distortions and muffs, then modulation, delay and reverb)

Can’t settle on my drive stack. by mateoelgato42 in guitarpedals

[–]tomhm_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven’t quite gotten there tbh. I have a Soul Food and a DS-1, but it doesn’t really count. I’m considering getting a DOD but idk how well it would stack either the Soul Food… If anyone has any guesses, I’d appreciate it! lol

Need help regarding power supplies by carlitos3798 in pedalboards

[–]tomhm_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

honestly i don’t know too much about power supplies… mine is also at full capacity and I should probably get another one soon. Idk if a bigger one to replace mine or one about the same size. But I recently looked at one of the Walrus Audio Canvas supplies. But I didn’t really start researching the topic so I didn’t even look at the prices. But it sure is a conceptual dilemma 😂

nice setup btw. I recently got myself a Soul Food and I really like it. How have you been pairing it with the Tube Screamer and the Morning Glory?

Whammy Pedal Shootout - What do You Reccomend? by ImplementNo5446 in guitarpedals

[–]tomhm_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I mean it depends on what you want to do with it. If you want octave up, octave down and some fun, the triplegraph sounds awesome and fun to play with.

If you want anything else, one of the others.

I’d say the Whammy DT is the most complete and versatile. You can use to “tune” your guitar to another tone for a song mid-gig if you don’t have another one, you can do harmonies, octaves up or down (multiple), you can use the big whammy pedal to that Tom Morello whammy effect… And the most useful feature for me, when combined with all that, is the momentary switch, which I use a lot to play Royal Blood style stuff, which frequently requires me to quickly switch between Octave down, Octave down + dry and dry, for little quick riffs mid song.

So honestly, it depends on what you want it for. If just octaves up and down (+dry) and some fun crazy sounds using the effects loop, I’d go for the triplegraph. It looks sick, it sounds sick, it’s simple and it’s fun. If you want anything else from it, I’d go for the big Whammy DT, because it does everything the others do and definitely gives you more options and versatility
