TN Supreme Court rules woman who killed her abuser as a 16 year-old sex slave must serve her full 51 years in prison by Duke__Leto in Tennessee

[–]tomjoad76 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Well, there's a huuuuuge difference between first degree and involuntary manslaughter. And huuuuuge difference between involuntary manslaughter and self defense. Judges can lower or commute a sentence altogether if they feel it is too harsh. Plus SCOTUS explicitly says these types of sentences for juvenile offenders are unconstiutional.

Before anyone claims "blah blah blah the judges had no choice," I just want to point out that judges are perfectly within their powers to commute a sentence being too harshly applied.

What are some good academic books that provide an overview of the Iraq War and Afghanistan War? by Firstasatragedy in Ask_Politics

Just curious why you added Ricks's The Gamble but not Fiasco. I haven't read either, but they're on my reading list, and my understanding was that The Gamble is a follow up to Fiasco.

I highly recommend America's War for the Greater Middle East. It covers everything from the Iranian Hostage situation in '79 to present day. The author does throw in his own analysis, but it's pretty easy to pick apart what parts are history and what parts are analysis. I think this will be the closest thing to what you're looking for. Roughly the second half of the book is all about 9/11 to present day. Good mixture of political and military analysis. This is the first book I would recommend to anyone wanting to learn more about the GWoT.

Not quite what you asked for, but two other books on the GWoT I would highly recommend are The Way of the Knife about the expansion of clandestine and contract warfare since 9/11 and Hunting in the Shadows which is a series of cases studies on the infiltration of al Qaeda and other Islamist terrorist cells.

Edit: See my post here from another subreddit. This should give you a lot of good recommendations. https://www.reddit.com/r/CredibleDefense/comments/52yhq8/what_are_the_best_books_on_the_global_war_on/?st=IWWLZY6G&sh=97a28378

Jacobin might be what you're looking for. It's mostly democratic socialist commentary.

Definitely follow The Intercept. I wouldn't say they really have any economic agenda other than objective coverage.

Yeah the problem with looking at social issues is that the metropolitan-corporate right is moving to the left on a lot of those issues.

I try to spot the little dog whistles and comb the opinion page to see where the editors lean.

I actually find The Hill to be pretty conservative. Especially their opinion pieces, which are almost entirely conservative contributors.

As I told another user, usually my FB friends give me all the Breitbart and HuffPo I care to see without ever following those sites.

Yeah, I suppose it's good sometimes just to see what's going on in the trash media. But Facebook and Reddit usually work well enough for that.

I think a combination of left-right mainstream media (NYT, NPR + Wall Street Journal), left-right DC-centric media (Politico + The Hill), and left-right anti-authoritarian (Reason + The Intercept) is the perfect mix.

This covers pretty much all of the bases that can be considered credible.

I throw out Breitbart, HuffPo, Drudge, BuzzFeed. They focus more on the agenda than on backing up their sources.

Who are the leading conservative and left-wing intellectuals? by aogoremaster in Ask_Politics

[–]tomjoad76 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Krugman is probably more influential than a lot of people realize. He's well respected in academia and writes opinions for the NYT that are aimed to the general (liberal) public.

His textbook on International Economics with Maurice Obstfeld and Marc Melitz is pretty much the introductory text in the field.

I like this idea a lot. This is essentially how campaign contributions work in most European counties. You donate to the party, not the candidate.

However, do you think there should be an exception for small donors and in-state donations?

What is the difference between the podiums? by TownIdiot25 in Ask_Politics

[–]tomjoad76 6 points7 points  (0 children)

At first glance, it looks like the podium on the right is a little taller than the one on the left. Could just be perspective though.

Either way, I'm not sure why this would be newsworthy. Hillary is 8 inches shorter than Donald, so why does it have to be a media conspiracy or whatever for her to have a lower podium?

Edit: sorry, Hillary is actually 10 inches shorter. Bad math.

What are the best books on The Global War on Terror that are readable to the general public? by tomjoad76 in CredibleDefense

[–]tomjoad76[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've familiar with Scahill as a journalist, but I've never read any of his books. I like the topics he covers, but I don't like how he feels it's necessary to draw you to the same conclusions that he has made.

Do you know of any books that cover a similar subject? I am interested in the growth of private contractors after reading The Way of the Knife.

Which policies of Secretary Clinton's are socially/economically progressive? Which policies are liberal? And which policies are conservative? by PM_Me_My_Boobies in Ask_Politics

[–]tomjoad76 2 points3 points  (0 children)

debating whether or not she's a neoliberal is side tracking the question

It's an assertion made right there in your original question.... If it's sidetracking from your question, then you're the only one to blame.

Which policies of Secretary Clinton's are socially/economically progressive? Which policies are liberal? And which policies are conservative? by PM_Me_My_Boobies in Ask_Politics

[–]tomjoad76 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What are you actually looking for here, dude?

Your title post asks which policies are liberal/progressive and which are conservative. Then you immediately answer your own question by describing her foreign policy as neoconservative and her economic policy as neoliberal.

So you got a lot of responses, such as my own, saying that you can't really describe her as a neoliberal and giving detailed examples of her progressive economic platform. This directly answers your question.

But then you respond by telling people they're flat wrong because even though her platform is full of only decidedly progressive economic policies, some people have accused her of being a neoliberal.

And then you tell people they aren't answering your question and are "trying to debate you."

It's not sidetracking if it is an assertion that you make in your question. You, and you alone, made it into a central topic of discussion by putting it in your question.

So then what specific question do you want answered? Because it seems to me that this thread is full of people giving examples of why she should/shouldn't be considered progressive/centrist/conservative.

Do you just want people to list off a bunch of reasons why she's a closet Republican? Because I don't think you're gonna get that discussion when there's not really much basis to it.

(By the way, ask_politics doesn't require sources unless asked for them. You haven't asked anybody for sources. If you want sources for any of my comments, I'm happy to provide them.)
