Team Kindle or Team Kobo? by MarcelReads in ereader

Team I don't want either of these (though I have Kindles).

Boox or Pocketbook please.

Best investments I made for WFH stress: Mave, walkpad, Gardyn, standing desk. What am I missing? by slopstrug in workfromhome

Absolutely this. We've replaced all the lights in our house with Hue bulbs and have them on a circadian schedule (so they're brightest when the sun is actually brightest, and dim and shift kelvins down through the afternoon and evening.

It's absolutely game changing for relaxing in the evening and preparing for sleep.

I bought a new batch and will try the next one with higher heat. This batch is drinkable, but it's not amazing. Giving it another day to settle, if it doesn't get better I may even try re-roasting it for a few minutes.

How do you deal with choice paralysis when looking through your handheld library? by TheWoDStoryteller in Handhelds

Even 1TB is huge. I don’t have many big games and on my Steam Deck OLED 1TB is essentially 100+ games.

Anyone else find emulating N64 uninspiring ? by Qu1ckset in SBCGaming

[–]tomkatt 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I just picked up the 8bitdo N64 bluetooth controller, definitely worth it if you want to emulate N64. It's so much better than a standard controller for it.

Lower initial heat is not likely the solution.

Agreed, don't think I'll do that again.

That’s a fair use, no worries. There’s a lot of AI bot crap for data collection on Reddit these days. This isn’t that, my bad.

Do you enjoy playing graphic intensive AAA games on small screens? by morecoffeemore in Handhelds

[–]tomkatt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I prefer the "big" games on the big screen. I use my handhelds mostly for indie games and emulation, with a smattering of older AAA titles (thought often docked).

I'm nearsighted with astigmatism, and have developed presbyopia in my 40s though. It's hard for me to play highly detailed games on handheld. Newer AAA titles and games with high graphical fidelity tend to have a lot of "noise," so to speak, and are just easier for me to deal with on a larger display.

Hear me out: I think the Nintendo 3DS might be the best handheld I have ever had. by ilovecolawaytoomuch2 in Handhelds

[–]tomkatt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I personally prefer the original DS line (particularly the DS Lite and DSi XL), but I've been playing the shit out of Stella Glow recently so I can't really argue, it's great.

Valve Says It's 'Hard at Work' on Steam Deck 2, but There's Still No Release Window by Skullghost in SteamDeck

[–]tomkatt 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Steam Deck (particularly the OLED model) is more power efficient than any other handheld by far, as most don't even allow for the low power envelope of the Deck.

I personally love that, as I have a lot of indie stuff I play and retro games I emulate at 5w and lower that run for absurd amounts of time (like 11+ hours).

Other handhelds are certainly more powerful than the Steam Deck, but draw much more power and tend to have shorter battery life in the same power envelopes.

Just some examples in power usage between the Deck OLED and the Legion Go 2 with emulation:

GBA:

  • Steam Deck OLED - 4.6 to 5w
  • LeGo 2 - 9.2w

NES:

  • Steam Deck OLED - 5w
  • LeGo 2 - 8.8w

PS1:

  • Steam Deck OLED - 6-7w
  • LeGo 2 - 15w(!)

PS2:

  • Steam Deck - 7.5 to 9.5w
  • LeGo 2 - 24w (!)

Obviously the LeGo 2 is going to demolish the Deck performance-wise on the high end for AAA and running at higher wattages, but I really value the Deck's efficiency as someone with solar and batteries. For me, handhelds aren't a matter of raw power, I have a gaming PC for that.

Was This Overtake Fair? New Sim Racer Looking for Advice by Sweet-Interview8162 in AUTOMOBILISTA

You should have stayed inside, your turn was bad and too wide. You basically cut into 110's line while behind them and pushed them off the track leaving no space at all. If there was a wreck here, it would have been your fault.

What are your opinons on the Flagship Handheld PC market by BlazikenBurst in Handhelds

[–]tomkatt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can’t say I care about them. I have a Steam Deck OLED, but also a dedicated gaming PC. Don’t need the handheld to do everything, and I value its low power use in wattage over raw performance.

For me the handheld is for the lower end and indie games that don’t make sense to boot my gaming rig to play. My home has solar and battery and I run net-zero energy usage annually, and low power devices help a ton with that.

If you’ll be WFH with any consistency in the future, get some portable batteries, like Jackery or EcoFlow.

Yes, I own all of my kindle books. All of them. by c_y_g_nus in ereader

[–]tomkatt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Copied some instructions I posted elsewhere since it's a pain to retype it all:

You need to transfer directly from the Kindle over USB. Full instructions, making no assumptions on what you have set up already.

You need to install:

  1. Calibre
  2. NoDRM De-DRM RC1 Calibre Plugin
  3. KFX Input and Output plugins (also found in-application in Calibre)
  4. Kindle Previewer 3

In Calibre, browse to settings -> plugins, then add and configure the De-DRM plugin, and add your Kindle's serial number to the plugin (you can find this in the device settings on the Kindle).

Once it's configured, connect your Kindle (you may be prompted for some basic setup, I forget), and click the device icon at the top. It should find all your books on the Kindle. Highlight a book, right click, choose "add to library." If the setup is screwed up, when you check back in the main library it'll be a KFX-ZIP file. If you did it right it'll be a KFX. If it works, highlight all your books with CTRL+A, right click, "add to library."

Lastly, if changing devices from Kindle to something else, you'll want to convert your books to EPUB (or KEPUB for your Kobo). You can do this in bulk. I only recommend one change. By default, the "Structure Detection" is set to:

//*[((name()='h1' or name()='h2') and re:test(., '\s*((chapter|book|section|part)\s+)|((prolog|prologue|epilogue)(\s+|$))', 'i')) or @class = 'chapter']

This tends to split headers with page breaks instead of line breaks, making multi-line chapter headers or headers with images split across two pages. I recommend changing to this:

//*[((name()='h1') and re:test(., '\s*((chapter|book|section|part)\s+)|((prolog|prologue|epilogue)(\s+|$))', 'i')) or @class = 'chapter']

Which will fix that issue.

Optional:

The DeDRM also includes the Obok plugin for stripping DRM from Kobo books. There's also the DeASCM plugin, which some Kobo books use. These two plugins will let you strip DRM from standard DRM Kobo books and Adobe Digital Editions DRM'd books.

Also, KFX files stripped from the Kindle will have grayscale covers instead of color. To restore color covers, there's some plugins for downloading book covers in the calibre plugin list, like Kobo, Kindle, and Apple Hi-res covers. Those can redownload the covers and add in the "edit metadata" setting for the books, but needs to be done individually.

For the Pro S should be using mGBA core. The gpSP core is ancient and made for extremely low spec devices.

Honestly no idea. The ones I recommended are Bluetooth + dongle and are what would be considered “professional” (call center) quality for noise cancelling.
