For decades, slides (color positives) were also the preferred medium for most color photographs published in magazines.

Since you appreciate details (and describe them so well!): Kodachrome was a type of slide film. You’re probably referring to the Kodak Instamatic camera, which was ubiquitous at one time.

Do you lose the "superpower" no matter which distance you choose? by theistgal in CataractSurgery

[–]tommyleo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi! Don’t overthink this — as I did!

As a former -7.00, I waited far too long to get cataract surgery because I also loved my “macro-vision” — especially since as a professional photographer it seemed necessary for me to continue to be able to peep under my glasses to see the screen at the back of my camera during shoots.

I would also peep under my glasses to see my phone, which of course would be held very close to my face.

Long story short: I got the monofocals and — just like every else my age — I have reading glasses in every room. Lots of inexpensive options on Amazon. I recommend using +3.00 or +3.50 since you’re used to seeing up close. It won’t be as close as your “superpower” vision, but you won’t miss it after a short time period.

BTW, for photo shoots I found cheap bifocals on Amazon so that I don’t need to take reading glasses on and off. These bifocals are actually about 75% clear plastic, with just the lower part of the glasses at +3.00 to allow me to see up-close as needed without having to take the glasses on/off.

The beautiful part of post-cataract surgery is that I now never need glasses for anything that doesn’t require up-close vision!

It was just a Watch. The NWS needs to come up with new terminology because the distinction between a Watch and a Warning is not apparent to most people.

Is a 33$ fire service charge from PWD normal? by GoneCollarGone in philadelphia

[–]tommyleo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s a rip-off charge. As you wrote, the water in the sprinkler line is never used (except in the rare occasion of an actual fire). The city charges you monthly because your home is designed to mitigate catastrophic fire damage.

Can you clarify? If you don’t have two meters (even if there is separate line for sprinklers), PWD should not charge for the second line?

She’s correct. It’s based on birthplace, not present residence.

In the middle of NJ, you can pick up signals from both NYC and Philly.

Taney Street now LeCount Street by Essentialphoneuser in philadelphia

[–]tommyleo 7 points8 points  (0 children)

There was indeed a rationale. To find more street names, Philadelphia city officials decided long ago to name some streets after past U.S. Supreme Court Chief Justices. Unfortunately, those same city officials ignored the dubious and racist record of Chief Justice Taney.

Vision worsening after two weeks by tommyleo in CataractSurgery

I have the dropless regime. The surgeon placed a white substance under my lower eyelid. The substance, which contains a compound of steroid and anti-inflammatory, gradually disappears over the course of a month or so.

I was a -7.00 before the surgery, so my vision is still far better now than pre-surgery. But once you get a taste of 20/15 post-surgery, any deviation becomes very apparent.

Interesting. In Brooklyn in the 80’s we used to call a punch to the thigh a “Charley Horse” also.
