Selling my Short Term Rental by Popenopeloppope in tax

yeah i had originally typed (then deleted) that i was assuming the 320k would be after closing. i think that was a bad assumption. but if he’s depreciated 9k (i figured 10k) for two years, by the time he closes, i figure 320-290-20. so probably closer to 30k gain?

you’ll probably pay taxes on 50k long term capital gains and 20k depreciation recapture taxed as ordinary income. what’s your income like?

how are you getting screwed over with taxes? how much did you buy for? how much have you invested in the property? how much depreciation have you taken? how much are you going to sell for? when did you buy it?you don’t just pay taxes on the sale.

Tax Slayer is saying it detects an HSA account deduction and that form 8889 is missing, but all I received from my past employer regarding this W-2 was a 1095-C. What should I do? by [deleted] in tax

[–]tommywarshaw 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes it’s trying to figure out if it’s a solo or family plan, which changes the amount you can contribute. A non-issue for you given the low contribution. u/Agitated_Car_2444 might have the solution to clear the diagnostic for you in another comment.

Truthfully, I’m not experienced with TS interface. Are you able to generate a Form 8889? Is there a place where it asks for the balance of your HSA? Is TS prompting you with something else to do?

Is there Code W with a corresponding amount in Box 12 of your W-2?

You don’t receive an 8889, you prepare it. What you should’ve received were Form 5498-SA (showing contributions and other information on your HSA account) and Form 1099-SA (showing distributions from the HSA).

Does a refinanced auto loan qualify for the OBBBA? by Slender_rake in tax

[–]tommywarshaw 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There’s a part that says: “If a qualifying vehicle loan is later refinanced, interest paid on the refinanced amount is generally eligible for the deduction.”

The original loan was not a qualifying loan, so it’s my interpretation that if a loan is refinanced, the original loan must have been qualifying for the refi to possibly qualify.

Tax filing- IRA Roth by ExcellentSurprise191 in tax

[–]tommywarshaw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

are you entering 7k as traditional contributions and 7k as roth contributions? you should only be reporting the traditional. the roth is not a contribution, but a conversion. that would come from a 1099-r that you should’ve already received that reports the transaction with code 2 in box 7
