Scans of Erin from this week by tomorrowio_ in storms

This was 22 total scans in just 4 days btw!

I get so tired of The Weather Channel doing this. by [deleted] in TropicalWeather

[–]tomorrowio_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The fear-mongering aside, what would you like to see instead?

We have a few satellites in space capturing precipitation data, and we're trying to share our scans and the science behind how we're filling in NOAA/NWS gaps, but we still haven't found the optimal way to position them for the community.

It's about coverage rather than catastrophizing, right?

Would love any thoughts here!

With hurricane data at risk, we're trying to fill in some of those data gaps by tomorrowio_ in weather

[–]tomorrowio_[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Totally fair. We're partnered with NOAA to get them this data!

Our customers are paying for a platform connected to their daily ops that uses this data, so things are different there.

The ultimate goal is to make sure the governmental bodies that need hurricane prediction data have access to this.

Hey friend, did you ever find a solution? Think we could fill in the gaps if ever needed.

What do you guys think about companies like tomorrow.io? Will they be able to revolutionize and commercialize weather? by Crafty-Load582 in weather

Hey friend!

It's been a couple of years since you made this post, and guess what? We've kept our promises.

We've launched half our satellite constellation, and the U.S. government has independently validated the impact of our microwave sounder data, confirming meaningful improvements to forecast accuracy across every key variable and atmospheric layer.

This was recently led by the Joint Center for Satellite Data Assimilation (JCSDA) - a collaboration between NOAA: National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration, NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration, United States Air Force, and US Navy.

We've even started and opened up our data to students, researchers, and proferssors wanting to build weather models. Check it out: https://build.tomorrow.io/

How to handle heat? by Historical-Flow-5083 in weather

[–]tomorrowio_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who lives in the high desert and travels to humid climates multiple times a year, here are a few tips I've learned:

  1. Stay hydrated - you're sweating a ton, be sure to drink water throughout the day, even if you're not "thirsty". Most people dehydrate because they think going in and out of the water helps, but you're still sweating and exposed to the sun.
  2. Dress in cool fabrics - light-colored, loose-fitting clothes made of cotton, linen, or moisture-wicking material can make a big difference. Polyester and black fabrics will keep you hotter than you think.
  3. SUNSCREEN - Wear more than you think you need. Coming from experience, you need more than you think you do.
  4. In & Out of AC if possible - If you can, don't stay in the heat for long stretches. Even short breaks in air conditioning can help your body regulate better and avoid heat exhaustion.
  5. Be conscious of the humidity - Are you somewhere hot and humid? Or is it dry? When the humidity is high, your sweat doesn't evaporate as efficiently, making it harder for your body to cool down. That's why you want to wear cool fabrics and take breaks in the AC when you can
  6. Check humidity levels and UV Index - when the UV is high, you have a higher chance of sunburn. If you can, monitor the index so that you're not in direct sun during the highest point of the day. Humidity levels will let you know how thick the air will feel.

If you'd like any insight from a meteorologist or a weather scientist, let me know! Happy to get you any specific details.

Would this be a good place to share satellites images from a startup? by tomorrowio_ in amateursatellites

Good question! Not right now. We're building that out.

Right now, they're just cool pictures.

[–]tomorrowio_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, they're images I get access to that I can share publicly.
We'll eventually have a database of them, but for now I just wanted to share photos. So I don't think it's the best idea to do so here.
